Hi @PatriciaG2024,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP OfficeJet Pro 8610 is not connecting directly to your Mac and you can only print using the HP Smart app, there could be several potential issues causing this problem. Here are steps to diagnose and fix this issue:
1. Check Printer Connection
Ensure the printer is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your Mac:
- On the printer, navigate to the network settings to check the Wi-Fi connection.
- On your Mac, ensure it is connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
2. Reset Printing System on Mac
Resetting the printing system can resolve many issues related to printer connectivity:
- Open System Preferences on your Mac.
- Select Printers & Scanners.
- Right-click (or Control-click) on the printer list and choose Reset printing system.
- Confirm the reset and then re-add your printer by clicking the + button and selecting your printer from the list.
3. Update Printer Drivers
Ensure that you have the latest printer drivers installed:
- Go to the HP Support website and download the latest drivers for your HP OfficeJet Pro 8610.
- Install the drivers on your Mac.
4. Add Printer Using IP Address
Sometimes adding the printer using its IP address can resolve connection issues:
- Find the printer’s IP address by printing a network configuration page from the printer.
- Open System Preferences on your Mac and go to Printers & Scanners.
- Click the + button to add a new printer.
- Choose the IP tab and enter the printer’s IP address.
- Set the Protocol to HP Jetdirect - Socket.
- Fill in the remaining fields and click Add.
5. Check Firewall Settings
Ensure that your Mac’s firewall settings are not blocking the printer:
- Open System Preferences and go to Security & Privacy.
- Select the Firewall tab.
- If the firewall is on, click Firewall Options.
- Ensure that your printer’s software is allowed to receive incoming connections.
6. Restart Devices
Restart both your Mac and your printer. Sometimes a simple restart can resolve connectivity issues.
7. Reinstall HP Smart App
Uninstall and then reinstall the HP Smart app:
- Delete the HP Smart app from your Mac.
- Download and install the latest version from the HP Smart app website.
8. Check Network Configuration
Ensure there are no network issues:
- Restart your router.
- Ensure there are no IP conflicts on your network.
9. HP Print and Scan Doctor
Use the HP Print and Scan Doctor for Mac:
- Download the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool from the HP website.
- Run the tool to diagnose and fix any printer issues.
10. Check for macOS Updates
Ensure your macOS is up-to-date:
- Open System Preferences and go to Software Update.
- Install any available updates.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
