HP LaserJet Pro P1102w Printer

Trying to print a 5x7 card from Tray 1, but printing starts about half way across the page. Have paper set at 5x7, no header or footer, .25” margins all around.

Hi @Randall46,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

When facing an issue with printing starting incorrectly on the page with your HP LaserJet Pro P1102w, especially when trying to print a custom size like a 5x7 card from Tray 1, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the problem. Here’s what you can try:

  • Check Printer Preferences: Make sure the printer preferences on your computer match the paper size you're trying to print. This includes checking both the application from which you're printing (like Word or Adobe Reader) and the printer properties settings in the Control Panel (Windows) or System Preferences (Mac).
  • Adjust Printer Settings: Access the printer settings through your computer or the HP Smart app (if available for your model). Ensure that the paper size is correctly set to 5x7 inches, and the media type matches your card's specification.
  • Align the Paper Guides: In Tray 1, adjust the paper guides snugly against the edges of your 5x7 card. This ensures the printer picks up and feeds the paper correctly. Misaligned guides can cause the printer to misjudge the starting point of your document.
  • Printer Maintenance: Perform a routine maintenance check on your printer. This includes checking for any jammed paper or debris inside the printer, ensuring the print heads are clean, and that the printer's firmware is up to date. HP often releases updates to improve performance and resolve issues.
  • Check Margin Settings: While you've set .25" margins, ensure that the application from which you're printing is not overriding these settings with its own margins or a header/footer setting that you might have missed.
  • Print Preview: Before printing, use the Print Preview function to ensure everything appears as expected. Sometimes, what you see in Print Preview can give you clues about what needs to be adjusted.
  • Printer Driver Update: Ensure your printer driver is up to date. Visit the HP website, find your printer model, and download the latest drivers. Outdated or corrupted printer drivers can cause various printing issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thanks!  Your comments did help.  I still had to play around with the left margin, but setting it to .5" instead of .25" allowed me to get all the printed matter on the 5x7 card.

Don't see the button for Kudos/Thanks else I'd click it!

I'm having a similar issue; I'd like to print with the long edge of a 5x7" leading into the machine but it will only print correctly with the short edge leading in. Can you detail all the page settings you entered on the printer, the print dialogue settings/paper size settings, and the orientation when feeding into the printer? I swear I've tried everything at this point! Thank you!

I print from a MacBook using Pages - don't know if that's a factor or not.  For the page setup, I used no headers or footers, .25" margins all around except left which is .5".  Custom paper size of 7x5, landscape orientation.  Helvitica Neue font. The paper went into Tray 1 with the 7" side as the width.  Hope this helps
