macOS 10.15 Catalina

New Color Laser Jet PRO 3301 cannot setup as printer has incorrect serial number. Can't download software on my IMAC

computer or setup printer as the serial number is not recognized by HP website. HP indicates incorrect serial number. HELP

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you. 
If your new HP Color LaserJet Pro 3301 printer is showing an incorrect serial number and cannot be set up or downloaded via HP's website on your macOS Catalina system, here are the steps to resolve it:

 

Double-Check the Serial Number

  • Make sure you're entering the correct serial number from the printer label (usually found on the back or inside the toner access door).
  • Avoid confusing similar characters like O (letter) and 0 (zero), or I (capital i) and 1 (one).

Try HP Smart App (Workaround)

Even if the serial number isn’t recognized on the website, you might still be able to set up the printer using the HP Smart app:

  • Download it from the Mac App Store.
  • Open the app and try to add the printer manually via Wi-Fi or USB.
  • If the printer is found, you may be able to install basic drivers and print, even if full functionality (like scanning) is limited.

Reset Printing System on macOS

If the printer was partially installed or stuck:

  • Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
  • Right-click in the printer list and choose “Reset printing system…”.
  • Then try adding the printer again via IP address or AirPrint.
