Bought new HP Deskjet 4220e series, but have so far failed to connect printer to my MacBook Air, even though the printer and the laptop are both confirmed as connected tot he same router. Any alternative suggestions, please?

Hi @RichardEF
Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.
Thanks for laying out the situation clearly. It’s frustrating when everything seems set up correctly but the connection still doesn’t work.
Let’s walk through a few alternative steps that often resolve this issue with macOS and the HP DeskJet 4220e:
Install HP Smart App:
- Download and install the HP Smart app for macOS from the Mac App Store. This application helps with setup and managing your printer on macOS devices.
Add Printer through System Preferences:
- On your MacBook Air, go to the Apple menu and select System Preferences.
- Choose Printers & Scanners.
- Click the + button to add a printer.
- You should see your HP DeskJet 4220e listed. Select it and click Add.
- Ensure that the connection type is set to “Bonjour” for a network connection.
Ensure Same Network:
- Double-check that both devices are indeed connected to the same Wi-Fi network (especially if you have multiple networks, such as a dual-band router).
- Sometimes the printer can connect to a different network band (2.4 GHz vs. 5 GHz), so it’s worth verifying the connection settings.
Verify Printer Software Installation:
- Make sure you have the latest printer drivers installed. Visit the HP Software and Driver Downloads page, enter your printer model, and download any available drivers for macOS 12.0.
- You can also try installing the latest HP Easy Start, which helps automatically access the latest drivers and software.
Reset Printing System (Advanced):
- If adding the printer doesn’t work, you can reset the Mac’s printing system.
- Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
- Right-click (or Control-click) in the list of devices on the left and choose Reset printing system.
- This will remove all printers, and you can try to add your HP DeskJet 4220e again.
Restart Devices:
- Restart both your MacBook Air and the HP DeskJet 4220e printer to clear any temporary connectivity issues.
Let me know which step gets you closer to a working setup, and I’ll guide you through the next part if needed.
