New MS Surface laptop ARM with snapdragon will not connect to HP Laserjet Pro MFP 4301 fdw

My computer professional son (Senior Dev Ops with over 20 years experience) just spent over an hour trying to get my new Surface laptop with ARM and Snapdragon to connect to my newer HP Laserjet Pro MFP 4301 fdw printer.  Lots of reports of problems with this online but haven't seen the solution.  Grateful for any guidance.

Hi @CoDiplo

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand that you're facing connection issues between your Microsoft Surface Laptop with ARM and Snapdragon processor and your HP LaserJet Pro MFP 4301 fdw printer. It sounds like you’ve already spent a fair amount of time troubleshooting, and there are a few potential reasons this might be happening. Let's go through some possible solutions that may help resolve the issue.

Troubleshooting Steps:

1. Ensure ARM-Compatible Drivers are Installed

  • The ARM-based Surface runs on a different architecture compared to traditional Intel-based laptops, and sometimes drivers that work on Intel/AMD processors might not be fully compatible with ARM-based systems.
  • Check for ARM-compatible drivers from HP for your printer model:
    • Visit the HP Support website.Search for HP LaserJet Pro MFP 4301 fdw.
    • Make sure to download the correct drivers that are compatible with Windows ARM. While most modern HP printers should work with Windows 10/11 ARM out of the box, checking for specific drivers is always a good idea.

2. Use HP Smart App for Setup

  • Sometimes, using the HP Smart App can help bridge compatibility issues with ARM-based devices.
  • Download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store.
  • Launch the app and try to set up your printer again. HP Smart is designed to detect printers and set them up easily, especially when the manual method fails.

3. Connect Printer Using Windows Built-in Driver

If the dedicated HP driver is not working, you can try using the Windows built-in printer driver for HP printers:

  • Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners.
  • Click Add a Printer or Scanner.
  • If your printer appears, select it. If not, click The printer that I want isn't listed.
  • Choose Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname and input the printer’s IP address (you can find this by printing a network configuration page from the printer).Follow the prompts and select the HP Universal Print Driver (if available) or a similar driver.

4. Check for Network Issues

  • Verify Network Connectivity: Ensure your Surface laptop and printer are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Some printers don’t work with certain network configurations, such as if the printer is on a different network or VLAN.
  • Printer’s IP Address: If you can’t connect via Wi-Fi, you may need to manually configure the printer’s IP address.
    • On the printer panel, you should be able to print a Network Configuration Page to obtain the IP address.
    • Use that IP address to manually add the printer via Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners > Add a printer or scanner.

5. Ensure Windows Updates are Installed

  • Windows ARM-based systems sometimes require updates for compatibility. Make sure Windows updates are fully installed, as there might be important patches related to printer compatibility with ARM devices.
    • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, and check for updates.

6. Try HP Print and Scan Doctor

  • If you haven’t tried it yet, use HP Print and Scan Doctor. It can help detect and resolve issues with printer connections.
  • Download it from HP’s official website.Run the tool and follow the instructions to see if it resolves any connection issues.

7. Use a USB Connection as a Temporary Solution

  • If you need to print urgently, connect your printer directly to the Surface using a USB cable. Once connected, try printing via USB to ensure that the printer works before troubleshooting further.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

None of these steps solve the problem.  I've tried them all.  I am a tech-savvy user and have the printer working with numerous other laptops.  It's an issue with the ARM-compatible driver.  Please work with Microsoft and fix this issue.
