I suspect my ancient HP Laserjet series 2300 has outlived its usefulness. If anyone has a work around to get it working on my new iMac with Sonoma OS, I would be appreciative to hear about it.

Hi @Annegram1,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The HP LaserJet 2300 is indeed an older printer, and getting it to work with a modern operating system like macOS Sonoma. Here are some general steps you can try to get it working.

  • Check for macOS Compatibility: Ensure that the LaserJet 2300 is compatible with the version of macOS Sonoma you are using. Check the HP website or the printer's manual for compatibility information.
  • Built-in Drivers: macOS usually includes a variety of drivers for popular printers. Connect your LaserJet 2300 to your iMac and see if macOS automatically detects and installs the necessary drivers. Go to "System Preferences" > "Printers & Scanners" and click the "+" button to add a printer. If your printer shows up, select it and see if it works.
  • Gutenprint Drivers: If the built-in drivers don't work, you can try using Gutenprint drivers. Gutenprint is a collection of open-source printer drivers that may support older printers. You can download Gutenprint from their website and install it on your iMac. After installation, try adding the printer again using the "Printers & Scanners" settings.
  • HP Website: Check the HP website for any updated drivers or software that may be compatible with macOS Sonoma. Download and install any available updates for your printer model.
  • Generic PostScript Driver: You can try using a generic PostScript driver. In the "Printers & Scanners" settings, click the "+" button to add a printer, and choose the "Generic PostScript Printer" option. While this might not offer full functionality, it could allow basic printing.
  • Cable and Connection: Ensure that the connection between your iMac and the LaserJet 2300 is secure. If you're using a USB connection, try a different USB port or cable.

Remember that with older hardware, there's a limit to how well it can be supported on newer systems. If all else fails, it might be worth considering upgrading to a more modern printer that is explicitly compatible with macOS Sonoma.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
