New printer installed but scanner not found

My printer died on on Monday and I went out to buy a printer on Tuesday--OJP 9015.  Good reviews and did what I wanted.  Installed, uninstalled, and re-installed software for OJP 9010 series multiple times.  Have spent at least 5 hours (not including wait time) on phone with HP Techs.  They say the scanner won't install because all of the updates for my Windows 8.1 laptop weren't installed.  They are now all installed and the problem is exactly the same.  I have used the HP Print and Scan Doctor as well as trouble shooting guides for problems with installations with undetected device.  I always fails to find the device, but I can print--but when try to scan--cannot find the device.  That also happens with HP Scan and Capture app.  I also have a laptop with Windows 10 on it.  Guess what?  When I installed the printer software, it also didn't install the scanner software.  In fact, under the HP Printer Assistant on the Win 10 laptop it only shows Print Fax.  On the Win 8.1 laptop, under Printer Assistant, the Print, Scan Fax icon is greyed out.  So my question is why does the box for this wonderful printer list under System Requirements Windows 8.1?  If it prints but doesn't scan it is not a fully functional model for a Win 8.1 system.  And, now it has failed on a Win !0 system.  This printer is going back to Best Buy where I bought it 4 days ago. 

My second question is does anyone have a recommendation for a printer that handles graphics well, auto duplexes, scans and will work on a Win 8.1 system.  Want a new model that will work with Win 10 when I finally replace my current laptop.
