Deskjet 6980
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

The HP Deskjet 6980 is on HP's list of Windows 10 compatible printers here:

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04658195

This document says that the printer has a  driver via Windows Update.

No such driver loads. I have followed all of the various troubleshooting steps as far as updating drivers, installing the printer ,and running the print and scan doctor. No driver appears. Printer works fine and is discoverable on Windows 7 with no issues. Scan Doctor sees the printer but tells me to use Windows Update to get a driver.

I understand that this is an older printer but it *IS* on HP's Windows 10 compatible printer list!

Thanks Betsy

PS in the interim, I have configured it as a Deskjet 6600 and it is printing but having some format issues. Is 6600 the best choice or is there another printer that would be closer?

@Betsys99,

Thank you for posting your query on HP Community,

According to the link which you have provided, it shows that HP DeskJet 6980 only has Windows update driver as the recommended driver.

The option you are looking is to OfficeJet 6980 printer.

HP Printers - Windows 10 Compatible Printers

As there is no full feature software available for Windows 10, I would suggest you would need to rely on Windows built in drivers.

For more details, please refer to this support document - HP Printers - Installing and Using the Windows Built-in Print Driver

I hope this information helps. Let me know if you need any further assistance. I'll be more than happy to help you.

Hi Jeet,

I ran Windows Update and the printer install several times following the detailed instructions on the HP site

HP Deskjet 6980 is NOT one of the HP printers that appears. Many other HP printers appear but not 6980

thanks Betsy

As you can see in the first  screenshot , the OS detects that there is a Deskjet 6980

However as you can see in the subsequent screenshots, when I request drivers from Windows update, 6980 is not one of the options. THere are three HP/Hewlett Packard sections and I am including a screenshot from each below

@Betsys99,

In this scenario, you may select the nearest printer and continue with the setup.

In the image 3. You may choose HP DeskJet 9800 and check if that helps.

Let me know the outcome!

Cheers 🙂

OK thank you

It is not doing too badly as a 6600 , I will play around with the other options.

@Betsys99

This might require a remote access of the printer.

I request you to talk to HP support.

They might have multiple options to help you with this.

  1. Click on this link - https://support.hp.com/us-en/contact-hp?openCLC=true
  2. Select the country.
  3. Enter the serial of your device.
  4. Select the country from the drop-down.
  5. Click on "Show Options".
  6. Fill the web-form. A case number and phone number will now populate for you.

To thank me for my efforts to help you, please mark my post as an accepted solution so that it benefits several others.

Cheers.
