OfficeJet Pro 8710
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I am unable to print from my computer to a new OJP 8710 (actually 8715 - Costco model) which is connected via Ethernet network (directly connected to router.)

My computer is a Dell StudioXPS desktop, Windows 7 Home Premium, also connected to the network via Ethernet. The network is set up for sharing via the same Workgroup name; no HomeGroup is set up. All sharing is enabled and no passwords required. "Home" network selected.

When attempting to print, the status displayed in the "See what's printing" window is an immediate "Deleting - Spooling" which then disappears. If it ever says anything else first, it's too fast for me to see. Nothing is "stuck" in the print queue; no print queue files remain. The only thing I can get it to print is an INTERNAL test sheet; attempting to print a test sheet from my computer results in the same no-print behavior. The computer CAN communicate with, get status from, and configure, etc. the printer, and access its internal web page, but print jobs never make it.

I have run through all the HP diagnostic tools and their suggestions, including numerous software/driver uninstall/re-installs. No love.

I have 2 other computers on the network - a Dell inspiron 11-3000 series laptop with Windows 10 Home, which connects via WiFi, and another Dell desktop (Inspiron 3650) with Windows 7 Professional which connects via Ethernet. Both are able to print to the OJP 8710 just fine. Both are configured identically to my "failing" desktop, as far as I can determine.

The port used is HP network re-discovery monitor, port name = serial number. I tried installing with just the printer's IP  address, with the same non-printing result. Whether I set if up as shared or not, or default printer or not, makes no difference. I have another printer connected to my computer via USB, and it is shared on the network. It always works.

My computer's network discovery does not always show other network devices (this has been "normal" forever,) but even when it does (and when it does, the printer is shown - as a printer) but I still can't print.

I need to be able to print to the OJP 8710; I'm retiring the other printer soon! Has anyone seen this before and solved it?

Thanks for the response. I logged on to chat and told the agent I needed phone support. He gave me the number, and it's 24/7. After doing a remote access, he went through much of what we did, then installed OJP8600 driver, which works great. My issue is now solved.

I would like to take a moment to thank you for posting on the HP Support Forums. I read your post and understand that you have an HP OfficeJet Pro 8715 All-in-One Printer connected via ethernet network and while printing, it displays "See what's printing" window is an immediate "Deleting - Spooling" which then disappears. I appreciate the steps you have performed and have certainly done a good job.

I did some research nd found that this is a print spooler issue. I recommend you to perform the below steps to isolate the issue and arrive at a solution:

  • Turn off the printer using the power button and then unplug the printer power cord from the power outlet.

  • Save your work. After using these steps, your current print jobs are lost and will need to be printed again.

  • Open Windows Services using one of the following methods:

  • Search Windows for services, and click Services in the list of results.
  • On your keyboard, press Windows key ( ) + R, type services.msc in the window that opens, and then click OK.
  • Scroll through the list of services and find the name Print Spooler.
  • Right-click Print Spooler and select Stop.

Figure: Stop selection for Print Spooler Service Service window the Print Spooler service selected from the Name list and the Stop selection called out.

  • After the service has been stopped, close the service window and use Windows Explorer to browse to C:\Windows\System32\Spool\PRINTERS.

  • Delete all files inside the PRINTERS folder.

  • Shut down your computer from Windows.

  • Make sure you printer has been unplugged for at least 60 seconds, and then plug the power cord into a power outlet.

  • Turn on the printer using the power button on the printer.

  • Turn on the computer and wait for Windows to open.

  • Try printing again and note what happens.

  • If the printer prints, you are done.

  • If the print job becomes stuck again, continue to the next step.

Please download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor software. The HP print and Scan Doctor software will identify and eliminate any print and scan issues: http://hp.care/2bZ9w2q

I Sincerely hope this resolves the issue. Keep me posted for any further assistance. Cheers! 🙂

Hi Kazi,

Thanks for taking the time to analyze and respond to my post. Unfortunately, after carefully following your suggestion step-by-step, I still got (nearly) the same result. This time I actually saw a "Spooling" status before it was quickly replaced by the fleeting Deleting - Spooling status message. At no time did it ever display a Printing status.

Also, when I checked for spooler files, there were none; the folder was empty, as I mentioned in my original post. So while I agree this looks like it may be some kind of spooler problem, it's not a STUCK spooler problem.

Just for comparison, I followed the status while I printed the same document to my other printer, attached to my computer via USB. It says "Spooling," then "Printing," and the document prints. Afterward, there are two 0 byte files in the PRINTERS folder, a .SHD and a .SPL file. The system won't let me delete or open them, and when I turn off my printer, they are immediately deleted by the system. To repeat, these are never created in the first place when attempting to print to the network-connected 8715.

I've already run the HP Print and Scan Doctor multiple times, with no success. I've also run SFC /scannow.

Can you dig deeper for me? Maybe I'm missing some system driver files that SFC didn't look for? As I stated before, my other Windows 7 desktop (brand new!) has no issues printing over the network to the 8715. So it is something peculiar to my computer only. Thanks again for your help.

P.S. I've also tried disabling my firewall while printing. No luck there either.

You're welcome. 🙂 I appreciate you taking you valuable time to troubleshoot this issue.

I suggest to uninstall the printer drivers from root level and then install them again. Please follow the below steps:

  • In Windows, search for and open Programs and Features.
  • Select your HP printer.
  • Select Uninstall.
  • In Windows, search for and open Devices and Printers.
  • In the Devices and Printers window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.”
  • Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo.
  • Type printui.exe /s and click OK.
  • Click on Drivers tab.
  • Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it click on it and click Remove at the bottom.
  • Select OK.
  • Select Apply and OK on the Print Server Properties windows.
  • Close Devices and Printers.

Once you perform the above steps, please download the drivers from this link: http://hp.care/2hfQQjb

Let me know the outcome. Good luck! 🙂

Hi Kazi,

I really appreciate your sticking with me on this. I tried your suggestion. First, after uninstalling, the 8710 had disappeared from Devices and Printers. Second, in Printer Server Properties, there was no driver for the 8710 remaining. I did the re-install from the page you linked, and I still got the same non-result.

To try to further narrow the source of the problem, I removed the printer's connection from the network and connected it directly via USB to my new Win 7 computer, made sure it was installed there (printed a document) and enabled sharing over the network. I then found the printer on my Network explorer display, clicked on Connect," and installed it on my computer. I tried printing again, and nothing printed. There was NO status message at all this time, and again no spooler files created. So sending a print job over the network is not working.

Does this suggest anything new to you? Thanks for helping.

You are welcome. 🙂 It is my duty to help you. We could try to install the basic Windows inbuilt printer drivers and that should help. These inbuilt drivers are basic print only drivers. Please try the steps as described in this link in detail: http://hp.care/2bYE4kP

NOTE: when you get the window with the list of HP Printer drivers to choose from, Please try to search for your printer i.e. HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 drivers. If the drivers are unavailable for your printer, then select drivers for HP Deskjet 990c and install them. Deskjet 990c drivers should serve the printing purpose.

If you happen to select drivers for your printer i.e. HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 and then it doesn't work then select drivers for Deskjet 990c and install.

Hope this helps. Good luck again! 🙂

Hi Kazi,

I tried something else last night, but didn't get a chance to report until now. I connected the printer directly to my computer via USB. It started searching Win Update for drivers. I clicked to stop it so I could use the 8710 install files I had downloaded from HP, but I got an error from bdagent.exe (my protection software is BitDefender) saying, "There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive \Device\Harddisk6\DR7." After closing the message I tried installing with the download, but no printing and no status messages. When I removed the USB cable, I got the same message from BD! So I re-tried after disabling everything I could find in BD - the firewall, antivirus, the works. Same scenario, including BD error message. So I reasoned that somehow BD was getting in the way, and I completely de-installed it using their special uninstaller.

I then tried installing again with just Win Defender running. This time I let Win Update find and install what it wanted to. It installed 8(!) things:

USB Composite Device

HP Officejet Pro 8710 (USB)

USB Printing Support

USB Mass Storage Device

HP Officejet Pro 8710 (REST_USB)

HP Officejet Pro 8710 (REST)

HP Officejet Pro 8710 USB Device

HP Officejet Pro 8710

Still no printing! But I did get the Deleting - Spooling status back this time.

Looks like my computer seriously dislikes this printer. I have another mfr's. laser printer on another USB port; no issues. (But I'm not going to un-install it to find out if installing ANY printer is the issue!)

Where do I start looking for something missing or mis-configured?

P.S. Even after removing all the devices and drivers (including using Printer server properties) my computer now tries unsuccessfully to install an Unidentified Device on every startup. First it searches Win Update, then searches "preconfigured drive folders" where it apparently finds something, then fails the install. I've checked Device Manager for anything showing up with a "bang" or "unidentified" on it - nothing.

Also, when removing the driver via Printer server properties, I selected the option to remove the driver and entire package, but it fails to remove the package's .inf file, stating Access Denied. I also tried to remove the 990c you suggested (didn't work either) so now i have hpygid18.inf and prnhp001.inf hiding somewhere.

@vonEsser

Thanks for replying. 🙂 You do not have to remove the deskjet 990c drivers. Instead, we need to install deskjet 990c drivers which are inbuilt into Windows and check if the printer prints.

Also, try to perform Windows updates and then try to install the deskjet 990c drivers. I'm always here to support. Let me know what happened.Cheers!
