Hi @Harvey8600,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If double-sided (duplex) printing is no longer an option on your HP Officejet Pro 8600 with Windows 11, you can try the following steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue.
Check Printer Settings:
- Open the document you want to print.
- Click on "File" and select "Print."
- In the print dialog, make sure the correct printer (HP Officejet Pro 8600) is selected.
- Look for a "Preferences" or "Properties" button and click on it.
- Check for a "Print on Both Sides" or "Duplex Printing" option. Ensure it is set to "Automatic" or "Flip on Long Edge."
Printer Driver Update:
- Make sure you have the latest printer drivers installed. Go to the HP official website, locate your printer model, and download and install the latest drivers for Windows 11.
Printer Software Reinstallation:
- Uninstall the existing HP printer software from your computer.
- Restart your computer.
- Download and install the latest software and drivers for your HP Officejet Pro 8600 from the HP support website.
Windows Update:
- Ensure that your Windows 11 operating system is up to date. Perform Windows Update to check for the latest updates and install them.
Printer Firmware Update:
- Check if there is a firmware update available for your HP Officejet Pro 8600 on the HP support website. If so, download and install the latest firmware.
Reset Printer Settings:
- On the printer control panel, navigate to the settings or setup menu.
- Look for an option to reset the printer settings to default. Perform a reset, and then reconfigure your printer preferences.
Remember to follow the recommended procedures provided by HP for your specific printer model and Windows version. Always consult the user manual or online documentation for your printer for detailed instructions.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi Alden4,
Thank you so much for all of your instructions. I appreciate it.
I uninstalled the printer and reinstalled it. I found that I needed to go to Settings, Printers, Printer Properties, Device Settings and then I can change Auto Duplex Unit from Not Installed to Installed. I then hit Apply and exit out. When I go to a Word document, automatic 2-sided printing is available. However, when I reboot, the auto double-sided printing is no longer an option and I need to go back to Settings again and reset it. Any fix for that??
Thank you again. By the way, I would have no idea how to do some of the things you suggested. I'm not that computer literate.

Thanks for the suggestion but it just takes me to the Community or the Virtual Agent who has not been able to help. My printer is expired so they are not showing a phone number to call which makes it impossible to speak to someone. Leaves me without help.
Thanks for your steps. I will review them again.

Hey Harvey,
I just noticed this happening on my 8600 printer starting this year. To simplify the solution description from the support guy, all I did was go into Printers and Scanners, selected the 8600 printer settings and clicked the Remove button at the top of the screen to get rid of the old software.
It seemed to automatically install the more up-to-date 8600 software which keeps the Automatic Duplexing Unit setting to Installed even after re-booting.
If it doesn't automatically install the more up-to-date 8600 software after you delete the one you have then just click Add Device from the Printers and Scanners screen. HP14596C (HP Officejet Pro 8600) should automatically come up as the default so just install this newer software.
You should be good to go now.
