I recently had to delete my printer and reinstall because I couldn't print at all.  I can now print, but I can no longer seamlessly print letter size and then 4x6.  All my settings and print preference are correct but can only print different sizes by going into preference and changing it.

Hi @sillyfritz,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

To print from the correct tray for different paper sizes after reinstalling your printer, follow these steps to ensure your settings allow for seamless transitions between letter size and 4x6:

  • Configure the Printer Driver Settings:
  • Open the printer driver on your computer.
  • Navigate to the "Properties" or "Preferences" section.
  • Ensure that the tray settings are accurately reflected. You should have the correct paper size and type selected for each tray.

Load the Appropriate Paper:

  • Load letter-sized paper in one tray and 4x6 paper in another (if your printer has multiple trays).
  • Make sure each tray is loaded correctly by adjusting the paper guides and tray settings to match the size of the paper.

Printer Settings on Your Device:

  • Go to "Printers & Scanners" settings on your computer.
  • Select the printer in question and click "Manage" or "Preferences".
  • Check for the setting that allows you to specify which tray or input to use for different types of print jobs, like letter size and 4x6 prints.

Test Print Jobs Individually:

  • Before attempting to print different sizes back to back, conduct test prints for each size individually to ensure that they are coming from the correct tray.

Application Printing Settings:

  • If you're printing from a specific application, ensure that it allows manual selection of trays or paper sizes for each job under the "Print" menu.

Update Firmware:

  • Ensure that your printer has the latest firmware from HP installed, which might include updates for better handling of print jobs per tray.

Take care and have an amazing day!
