I have an Office Jet Pro 6978 and am attempting to disable cartridge protection.
Printer software is updated.
I have gone to my printer IP address:
Under Tools/Cartridge settings I can click to disable cartridge protection however this DOES NOT WORK.
Searches indicate that there should be a another tab under Tools however there is not.
Please help. I'm stumped and need my printer for work.

Hi @prtlndblnd,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I see that you have an issue using non-HP ink cartridges on your printer.
A) Please follow the steps below to fix the issue.
1) Take out the cartridges
2) Unplug the power cord from the printer & wall.
3) Press and hold the power button down for 15 seconds and release the power button, wait for about 30 seconds.
4) Plug the power cord back into the printer and wall, ensure the printer is plugged into the wall & not into a surge protector.
5) Insert the cartridges back into the printer.
Remove the cartridges > Unplug the power cord > Wait for 30 seconds > Plug the power cord back in > Insert the cartridges
B) Kindly refer to the steps on this link to update the printer firmware and let me know if that resolves the issue.
C) If the issue still persists, refer to this link for more information related to using non-HP ink cartridges.

If you are using generic or Non HP ink cartridges and the above steps do not help. You will have to contact the generic ink cartridge manufacturer to assist you further with it or you will have to use genuine HP ink cartridges to resume printing.
Please mark this post as “Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved and if you feel this reply was helpful click “Yes”.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a great day ahead!

Sorry I was out of town and then had graduation. Just now sitting down to address.
i followed all steps exactly and it still doesn’t work. Clicking on the last link you sent it looks like my printer was probably manufactured after 12/1/16. Does that mean there is absolutely NO solution and I’m forced to purchase HP ink?
At this point I’m pretty angry that my perfectly functional device is now rendered useless by HP. If you want to make this policy on new printers go for it. But to basically terminate my usage is not acceptable. I will NEVER buy another HP product of this is the case.
