Hi @ALLEN78387,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M183fw request for older firmware. Let’s go through a few checks.

Check Available Firmware Versions on HP Support Site

Open a web browser and go to support.hp.com.

Search for “HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M183fw”.

Select Software, Drivers and Firmware.

Expand the Firmware section to view available versions.

Download any earlier firmware version listed.

Verify Firmware Downgrade Is Allowed

Print a Configuration Report from the printer control panel.

Locate the current firmware version.

Compare it with the firmware version available for download.

Confirm the printer allows firmware downgrade in its settings.

Note: Some firmware releases permanently block downgrades for security reasons.

Update Firmware Using USB Connection

Connect the printer to the computer using a USB cable.

Run the downloaded firmware update utility.

Select the printer when prompted.

Allow the update process to complete without interruption.

Disable Automatic Firmware Updates

Open the printer Embedded Web Server using the printer IP address.

Go to Settings > Printer Update or Firmware Update.

Turn off automatic updates.

Restart the printer.

I hope this helps.

The old firmware file could not be found using the method described in the article.Could you provide a direct download link for the old firmware file?

Hi @ALLEN78387

Thanks for getting back to us.

HP designs its firmware updates to improve security, reliability, and performance, and once installed, they are not intended to be rolled back.

In fact, HP explicitly does not provide an official method to downgrade firmware on this device line.

Here’s the key point, expressed clearly and elegantly:

  • Firmware updates are one-way. Once applied, they cannot be reverted using HP’s official tools or support channels.

  • HP’s stance is intentional. This protects against vulnerabilities that could be reintroduced by older firmware versions.

  • User implication. If a newer firmware introduces limitations (for example, compatibility changes), there is no sanctioned path to return to an earlier release.

In short: HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M183fw firmware is designed to move forward only—there is no official downgrade path.

Thanks,
