Hi @RogerMexico2024

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're dealing with a couple of complex issues with your HP OfficeJet 8720, particularly with locked settings and ink cartridge recognition problems. Let’s break down the issues and walk through potential solutions to unlock the printer and get it working again.

Steps to Unlock the HP OfficeJet 8720

If the printer is locked by the previous configuration settings (which could be from a business or organization), there are a few ways to attempt unlocking it. You might need to access the Admin settings or reset the printer fully.

1. Admin Lock Code (If You Know It)

If you know the admin password (perhaps from the previous owner or the person who configured the printer), you can access the printer's settings and unlock it.

  • To enter the Admin settings:
    1. On the printer’s control panel, tap on the Settings (gear icon).
    2. Select Printer Maintenance or Advanced Settings.
    3. If prompted, enter the admin password.

2. Perform a Hard Reset

Sometimes a hard reset (also called a "Factory Reset") can remove the lock and return the printer to its original settings. Be aware that this will erase all configurations, including network settings and admin preferences.

  • Hard Reset Method:
    1. Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
    2. Wait for about 30 seconds to allow the printer to fully power down.
    3. Plug the printer back in, but do not power it on yet.
    4. Press and hold the # and 3 keys on the printer's control panel.
    5. While holding those buttons, power on the printer.
    6. Keep holding # and 3 until the printer resets.
    7. After the reset, try to reconnect the printer to your Wi-Fi network and check if the lock issue is resolved.

3. Reset to Factory Defaults

If a hard reset doesn't work, you can try restoring the printer to its factory default settings through the menu:

  • Factory Reset Method:
    1. On the printer’s control panel, tap the Home button.
    2. Select Settings (gear icon).
    3. Scroll to Printer Maintenance or Restore settings.
    4. Choose Restore Factory Defaults.
    5. Confirm the reset process and let the printer reboot.

This will reset all preferences, including locked configurations.

Ink Cartridge Issue (Yellow, Cyan, Magenta)

It sounds like the printer is having trouble recognizing the cartridges correctly, which could be due to the way it's detecting ink levels, or it could be an issue with the continuous ink system that you mentioned.

1. Check for Ink Cartridge Recognition

If the printer is incorrectly detecting your cartridges as used or having issues with the ink system, here are some troubleshooting steps:

  • Reinstall the Cartridges:
    • Turn off the printer.
    • Open the cartridge access door and carefully remove the yellow, cyan, and magenta cartridges.
    • Check for any debris or dust on the contacts of the cartridges.
    • Reinstall the cartridges, making sure they click into place securely

2. Clear Ink Error and Perform a Cartridge Alignment

Sometimes an error can occur when the printer is trying to align cartridges or detect ink levels.

  • Perform an Ink Cartridge Alignment:
    1. On the printer’s control panel, go to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Align Ink Cartridges.
    2. Follow the instructions to align the cartridges and ensure proper printing.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thanks for helping me...

Before you answered me, I performed a Hard reset, pressint home button, then return twice and then home, so took me to som kind of hidden menu and went to restar something like ODDB o something like that so start and goes to factory reset so got to star with language etc, the thing is that when was on new confg, shows again the message :

There is a problem with the supply system Try replacing the affected cartridge with a different one that is not empty If the message reappears again, save it and contact HP (with de C (Cyan icon) above)

So from there, cant continue with "newer configuration" because on process shows less percentage of advance, So as I can see, cant go over even to conect wifi until solve the problem.... which is the initial problem:

-----Replaced yellow and magenta for new ones oem, started checking, I could see that showed the 4 as full, and then, some secs later, show thar Cyan, was already used and that replace by other one that was empty, which is incorrect because was new from a few days,,,,

Please help because tyhe technicians dont want to anything, they just told me that if the problem is the main base (The little basket where put the cartridges, in spanish "CABEZAL") wich I can see is detachable, but if that is the problem is better to replace the whole machine!!!! can you imagine??

Hi @RogerMexico2024,

Welcome back to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

If you've gone through the troubleshooting steps and the issue persists, it may indeed indicate a deeper hardware issue with your printer.

In such cases, reaching out to HP phone support to discuss service or replacement options would be the next recommended step.

For that to happen, we will give you additional instructions/information via Private Message.

Please check your inbox on the forums page for the private message.
