HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

About 2 weeks ago, my printer started just randomly printing network configurations or other canned print features.  It kept doing it and then I noticed the printer screen is constantly jumping around and making its own screen selections.  It happens non-stop when the printer is on so I have to keep it off until I need to print something.  It does it even with no computers on or hooked up to it.   It just makes random selections all of the time I can see the screen doing it.  I have done the semi reset.

Please help!

Hi @amyers43,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It seems like you're experiencing some technical issues with your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-In-One Printer. The symptoms you've described, such as the printer printing network configurations and making random selections on the screen, can be quite frustrating. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can take to address the problem.

  • Check for Firmware Updates: Ensure that your printer has the latest firmware installed. Sometimes, manufacturers release updates to fix bugs and improve stability.
  • Factory Reset: Try performing a factory reset on your printer. This will restore it to its default settings and can often resolve software-related issues. Be aware that this will erase any custom settings you have configured.
  • Disconnect from the Network: Unplug the network cable or disable Wi-Fi on your printer. This can help determine if the issue is network-related. If the problem stops when the printer is offline, there may be a network configuration issue or a conflict.
  • Wired or Wireless Connection: If you were using a wired connection, try switching to a wireless connection (or vice versa) to see if the problem persists. This can help identify if the issue is related to the connection method.
  • Check for Malware: It's unlikely but possible that your printer's firmware has been compromised. Ensure that your network is secure, and consider running a malware scan on any computers connected to the network.
  • Service or Repair: If the printer is still under warranty, contact HP for warranty service.

Keep in mind that performing a factory reset will erase your printer's settings, so you might want to take note of your configuration options or save them if needed

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
