I have an old Officejet 4500 printer. I don't use it for printing anymore but I would like to use it as a scanner. Will it work as a scanner without the print cartridges, or with them gone?

@BigAssJack, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

Yes, you can use your HP Officejet 4500 printer as a scanner even if the print cartridges are empty or removed. The scanning functionality is independent of the print mechanisms, allowing you to continue using your device for scanning documents. Make sure your printer is connected to your computer and the necessary drivers or software are installed to facilitate scanning functions.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
