Every time I try to print in black and white on my  Officejet 4630, it always uses the color cartridge despite clicking “black and white” on the Print dialog box.  This happens whether I use both my iPad Pro running iOS 15 or my MacBook Pro running OS 12

Welcome to the HP support community.

I understand that your printer is using color cartridges even while printing in black and white, I am glad to assist you.

  • Though you print in black and white, the printer will use a little bit of ink from color cartridges for best print quality.
  • You can print in single-cartridge mode to use only a black cartridge.
  • Use the single-cartridge mode to operate the HP Officejet 4630 series with only one ink cartridge. The single-cartridge mode is initiated when an ink cartridge is removed from the ink cartridge carriage.

This helps a lot. But if I put a color cartridge back in order to print in color will I need to remove it each time I want to print only in black?

If both cartridges are inserted, it will use the color cartridge as well to print in black.

If you want to use the printer in single-cartridge mode, remove the color cartridge from the printer.
