For several years I had good service using my Officejet 4650 to print documents from my MacBook Air, using the HP Instant Ink service. Then one day the printer began mysteriously repeating print jobs. I would print a document, shut down my MacBook for the night, and when I fired it up in the morning, the last print job I did the night before would mysteriously repeat. This problem was intermittent; sometimes it would do this, but at other times it would work normally. I called HP Support and the agent led me through setting up the printer afresh, using its IP address to add it through the Printers and Scanners area of System Preferences on my Mac. This seemed to solve the problem for a few weeks, but after I returned from a trip I found the printer refusing to print and my MacBook unable to communicate with it. I have tried repeating the setup solution I was given by HP Support but this no longer works. The user manual for the OfficeJet 4650 does not seem to have Mac setup instructions in it, and I am now completely unable to use the printer or the HP Instant Ink service for which I am paying every month. I have tried all the usual tricks of disconnecting and restarting. The online HP Instant Ink service indicates everything is fine and it has no problem reading the number of pages I have printed from the printer, so the basic problem seems to be that macOS can no longer communicate with this printer.

@JayFull17, Welcome to the HP Support Community! I’m here to help.
I understand the Mac and the printer are not connected. Let us try these steps:
- Restart the router, the printer, and the Mac
- Make sure the printer and the Mac are connected to the same wireless network. Either 2.4 or 5GHz network.
- If you have a Dual-band router and both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks share the same name/SSID, the printer will not be able to connect to the network. In this case, contact your Internet service provider to assign different names to both networks.
Perform a ping test to check the connectivity
- Obtain the IP address of the printer by clicking on the Wireless icon on the printer
- Open a new Terminal window (it's located in Applications > Utilities, or you can just start typing it in Spotlight).
- Enter “ping” followed by the IP address of the printer.
- Press Return. Press ctrl C after 10 pings
- There should be 0% packet loss, share the results in your next post.
Use the HP Smart app to print from your Mac. You may download this from the App Store.
Hope this helps! Let me know how it goes.

Thank you, Kumar, I appreciate the help. The steps you outline to reconnect the printer wirelessly are quite familiar to me, since I've had to go through them quite a few times to keep this printer working. I decided in the end to just plug in a USB cable when I want to print -- it's less trouble than trying to figure out why the wireless connection won't function properly.

Sure, if you want to connect it wirelessly, you may perform the steps and let me know.
Happy holiday!
