officejet 4650
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Brand new officejet 4650 refuses to install the printer drivers.

Tried all the downloads from HP to make sure drivers are the latest.

Tried all the advice from the unhelp pages but still the driver refuses to install.

If you try to install from Windows directly the erorr message indicates that the driver isn't compatible?

I'm runnig Windows 10 64bit.

Hoped that HP employees actually monitored this forum.

Since i'm unable to call them (I'm at work when their support lines are open), and I couldn't find an email address I'm left with no support for a brand new product.

If no one out there has any insight into this issue perhaps they know of another way to contact HP support.

Hi @AAAAAARRGH,

Thanks for engaging in HP support Forums! This is a wonderful location to converse with the community, get assistance and find tips! I understand you are having issues installing the printer software. Don't worry I'll do my best to help you resolve this issue.

Let's try a clean install and check if that helps. Please follow the steps below:

· First, unplug the USB cable from the printer if present.

· Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Officejet printer entries and uninstall them.

· Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.

· Restart your computer.

· Click the bottom-left Start button on desktop, type device manager in the search box and tap Device Manager on the menu.

· Once in device manager, click on the view tab in the top & choose “Show hidden devices”.

· Then from the device manager list, check the entries under “Printer” – If there are any entries, please right click and choose “uninstall” – In the confirm device un-install pop-up, make sure you select the box which says “Delete the driver software for this device".

· Also, check the entries under "printer queue" and "imaging devices" and repeat the same exercise. Delete any printer entry or any entry which says, “Unknown device”.

· Once done, close device-manger. Then press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" and press enter.

· Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.

· Again, go to run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.

· Once done you can try cleaning out your temporary files and cached files. You can try using automated applications like some cleaner software's that you can download from the internet.

· Now restart your computer again.

· Open the Run window again, type “services.msc” and press ok to get services window.

· Scroll down to “Remote Procedure Call (RPC)” – right-click and go to properties. Make sure the service is started and startup type is “Automatic”.

· Now scroll up and go to “Function Discovery Provider Host” – right-click and select properties – Change the startup type to “manual” and start the service.

· Repeat the same exercise on “Function Discovery Resource Publication” as well.

· Click on  http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/COL61230/mp-147816-1/OJ4650_Full_WebPack_1122.exe  and install the software.

· Connect the USB cable if prompted and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

If you are still facing the issues to remove the driver, then try using a 3rd party software removal applications like "Revo uninstaller" or "Wise" to completely remove the programs.

Hi @AAAAAARRGH,

As I understand you have tried to install the full feature software and still having the issue.I would suggest you could try to install the printers using the Windows built in drivers.

Go to HP Printers - Installing and Using the Windows Built-in Print Driver and follow the step 3 to install the printer using the built-in drivers.

Please let me know if this resolves the issue. or if you require any further assistance.

Keep me posted,

Yes I've already tried this, but I ran through it again so that I could send the screen shots.

I'm getting extremely fed up with this. Can I remind you that this is a brand new printerand that I do not work for your test department. At least if I did I'd be getting paid to test your installation procedures.

This is an HP laptop with a Windows 10 installation only a few weeks old. It's a pretty straight setup with nothing unusual about it. I have followed the installation proceedures supplied and they failed. I've tried all the available trouble shooting found on your site and I've now repeated this on your request.

Still it doesn't work.

Do you actually support the latest release of Win 10. Have you actually tested your driver installation properly since the last windows update?

I can understand if an OS upgrade is causing you issues but,

I can understand if an OS upgrade is causing you issues but,

  1. I don't expect to buy a product that claims to work with my OS then simple doesn't. At the very least I'd expect an apology and remediation plan clearly visible on the support site.

  2. I don't expect to be part of your test process. I purchased a released product not a Beta.

  3. I do not expect to be fobbed off and with dealying tactics while your dev team look to fix the issue. You have my sympathy but I have work that requires this printer and you should not be on my critical path.

So please either provide the solution or own up to the issues so that I can return this printer and replace it with one that works. I've now spent mso much time installing these drivers that it is now costing me money.

While looking for a solution around the web I have seen several examples of this issue. While there may not be thousands of people suffering like this the ones I found all have one thing in commmon. They are still waiting for a fix.

Is not a priority because it hasn't effected enough people yet to make enough noise?

Please look to escalate this issue.

Even if it's just for the sake of your reputation

Two days and not even the decency to respond further.

No solution to the issue at all from  HP tech support.

Well the good news for all of the user group out there I have found the solution to the issue (clearly HP expect us users to fend for themselves then save them money by posting the solution here). So here goes.

1. Unplug the printer.

2. Package it back in the box

3. Return to retailer. Many thanks to my local Curry's PC World who replaced it with no quibbling.

4. Select alternative from competitor (I chose an Epson Workforce).

5. Install new printer as directed by manufacturer..... WORKED 1st TIME

6. GET THE JOB DONE AND WAVE BYE BYE TO THE HP TIME SUCKER

Commiserations to those of you that are stuck and unable to get a replacement.

I'm having the same problem, be rest assured that if I am unable to install this printer under Windows 10 Pro - it will be the last printer I will buy from HP and I'll encourage others to follow suit.  End users should not become beta testers for major corporations like HP and Microsoft - either get it together or get out of the business completely.  Your days of hoodwinking the general public are over !!!
