Officejet J3600 All in one
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I tried installing the driver offered here:

https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-officejet-j3600-all-in-one-printer-series/344098...

... but the installation aborted with an error message  that indicated the software was for Win 8 or 8.1.

Is a Win 10 driver available for my old (but very reliable) J3600?

Thanks in advance!

@baja463

Welcome to HP Forums,

This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips,

Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out 🙂

As I understand, you're having issues installing printer drivers,

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

When was the last time it worked fine?

Were there any hardware/software changes made?

Have you tried installing Windows built-in drivers?

Let's try these steps to resolve the issue:

Root level uninstall and reinstall printer drivers:

  • Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP OfficeJet printer entries and uninstall them.
  • Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.
  • Then press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" and press enter.
  • Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
  • Again, go to run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.

To reinstall, click here: https://hp.care/2MhSUUX

If the issue persists, uninstall and reinstall drivers using Windows Built-in Print Driver: https://hp.care/2igKeU1

If you still receive the error message, please create a new user account on your PC and install printer drivers:

Keep me posted,

For I shall follow-up on this case to ensure the concern has been addressed,

And your device is up and running again,

Have a great day 🙂

Cheers 🙂

Thanks for your reply and your interest, flower_bud.

First, to answer your questions:

When was the last time it worked fine?

This HP J3680 has not worked on this particular PC; however, it worked fine on a previous Win 10 PC that has since been retired.

Were there any hardware/software changes made?

Not applicable.  My PC is fully patched and up to date.  As reported in the original post, I attempted to install the printer driver suggested by HP, but the install failed because it found a Win 10 PC instead of a Win 8.

Have you tried installing Windows built-in drivers?

No.  I have another printer installed (a Brother LaserJet), which is working without any problems.  I  am hesitant to cause any probloems which may make that device inoperable.

Now to followup with your suggestions, which advised a "Root level uninstall and reinstall printer drivers" ... Again, because I have a working printer installed I am reluctant to follow these steps.

In view of this, please let me know if you advise proceeding with the Root level uninstall.

Thanks again.

I read the post. Thanks for your update. As @Flower_Bud is out for the day, I am responding on her behalf.

It is suggested to try the root-level uninstall for this printer to work.

Thanks and have a blessed week ahead. 🙂

Thanks for your help, but nothing you suggested worked.

I solved the problem by buying a new printer.

Regards.

Flower_Bud:

I have been buying HP printers since 1997. This solution was perfect. 2 things you should add. Disable your anti virus and firewall. Disconnect from the internet.

“Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.” Only remove HP entries. Do not remove the built in Windows 10 Microsoft print drivers.
