macOS 11.0 Big Sur

Just retired! Work HP laptop had to go back.

Have my Apple MacBook running Big Sur OS 11.7.10.

Macbook will print to printer but will not scan.

Tried software updates. Totally frustrating! Directed to app store for HP Smart App only to get message that this is only available for OS12 and above!

All other routes through HP fail.

Any Help greatly appreciated

Thx

@BigVen, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

It sounds like you're hitting a roadblock with the compatibility of the HP Smart app, especially since it’s only available for macOS 12 and later. Let’s work through a couple of things that might help you resolve this.

Use macOS's Built-In Scanner Tool

macOS also has a built-in scanning tool that might work without any additional software:

Open the Preview app (this is built into macOS).

In the top menu bar, go to File > Import from Scanner or Import from [Your Printer Name].

You may have to select your printer from the list, and you should be able to scan directly.

Check Printer & Scanner Preferences

Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.

Make sure your printer is listed there.

Select the printer, and on the right, click on Open Scanner. This should open the scanner interface, allowing you to scan your document.

Install or Reinstall HP Printer Drivers

Go to the HP OfficeJet Pro 8715 All-in-One Printer Software and Driver Downloads | HP® Support

Download the driver for macOS 11 (Big Sur), not for later versions like macOS 12.

After installation, reboot your Mac and try scanning again.

Reset the Printing System

If none of the above work, resetting the printing system might help clear out any configuration issues:

System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.

Right-click (or Control-click) in the printer list and choose Reset printing system.

After this, re-add your printer by clicking the “+” button and following the steps.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
