The printer is 18 years old and requires a USB 1.1 cable. If I bought one could I connect this cable to my Asus Laptop with Windows 10 and are there drivers to download that will work? Will any other cable work?

Any current USB cable should work if it has the correct connectors. I terms of drivers, you may be limited to using a Microsoft native driver. You can check at Support.hp.com to see if there is a driver for your printer.

Thanks. I managed to get it hooked up to my laptop, downloaded the drivers and it worked. However when I tried to use an old unpackaged cartridge it sent black ink all over the inside and I barely got it cleaned up. Any hints on getting ink out of the printer?

As a technician I use a special vacuum that contains a fine particle filter. Not sure if current vacuums with a HEPA filter would be safe. Do not use compressed air as this can blow toner into the optics.manual cleaning with a swiffer type cloth would be your best bet.
