I'm trying to install an HP Envy 5546 printer (secondhand) and while I can install it the system shows 'driver unavailable'.  I've attempted to find a new driver but without success.  Can anyone help please?

Hi @Andrew476,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Certainly, I can guide you through the steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue with your HP Envy 5546 printer. Here's a general process to follow.

  1. Check the Basics:

    • Ensure that the printer is connected to your computer correctly, either through a USB cable or over the network if it's a wireless printer.
    • Make sure the printer is powered on.
  2. Download the Latest Driver:

    • Visit the official HP website: HP Support.
    • Enter your printer model (Envy 5546) and navigate to the drivers section.
    • Download the latest driver compatible with your operating system.
  3. Install the Driver:

    • Once the driver is downloaded, run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions to install the driver.
  4. Windows Update:

    • Make sure your Windows operating system is up-to-date. Sometimes, Windows Update includes printer driver updates.
  5. Remove Previous Installations:

    • If you've tried installing the printer before, there might be conflicting installations. Uninstall the printer software and drivers from your computer.
      • Go to "Control Panel" > "Programs and Features" (or "Add or Remove Programs").
      • Find the HP printer software in the list, right-click, and select "Uninstall."
  6. Disconnect and Reconnect:

    • Disconnect the USB cable, if connected.
    • Restart your computer.
    • Reconnect the USB cable to a different USB port.
  7. Check for Windows Troubleshooter:

    • Use the built-in Windows Printer Troubleshooter to identify and fix common printer-related issues.
      • Go to "Settings" > "Update & Security" > "Troubleshoot."
      • Run the "Printer" troubleshooter.
  8. Manual Installation:

    • If the automatic installation doesn't work, you can try manually adding the printer.
      • Go to "Settings" > "Devices" > "Printers & scanners."
      • Click "Add a printer or scanner" and follow the on-screen instructions.
  9. HP Print and Scan Doctor:

    • Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor utility from the official HP website. It can diagnose and resolve common printing problems.

Remember to restart your computer after making changes to ensure that the changes take effect.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
