I have just tried the solution here:
which uses the USB device option from the main printer menu instead of the boot-up menu but even after waiting 30mins I don't get the 'upgrade' option, just "print documents" and "scan to". It seems like the printer doesn't recognize that there is a .ful2. firmware file on the USB stick(s) at all.

Apologies for the multiple posts here but I finally got this to work.
I followed the procedure on the other post (https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-Setup-Software-Drivers/Your-latest-update-bricked-my-Pagewide-...)
BUT...
I had to go into the hidden 'enable/disable' menu to activate the 'Firmware Update' option. The hidden menu is accessed by pressing home-back-home-back (the buttons aren't visible but they respond anyway). Then select 'Enable Disable Menu' and scroll down an make sure 'Firmware Update' is switched on.

The printer kept getting stuck at "verifying". What resolved the issue for me was switching to another USB drive. I initially used a 4GB one and then switched to a 16GB one. I didn't even notice the "verifying" message with the new USB drive.
The old USB drive is not broken, so it's something about the printer not being able to read that particular drive. I formatted both USB drives in the same manner and used the same file.

I was stuck with the same message and after trying with different USB sticks, I figured out I had the wrong file version. I have 477dw but the file was for the 477dn. After downloading the right file I didn't have a problem.
Important info: While the printer is in the "Verifying" message you can unplug the non-working USB and plug in another. If the software is correct it will automatically, within a second start to update the software. No need to power off the printer.
Just trying to help everyone stuck with this message so you don't have to shut off the printer and go back in.
I've made an update using the front USB port.

After spending hours trying to resolve this, I finally found this post and followed it and it fixed my issue. Then a week later the problem came back. MAKE SURE YOU DISABLE THE AUTOMATIC UPDATES or it just happens again! Luckily this time I knew exactly what to do to fix it. But shame on HP for having crappy Quality Assurance and causing thousands of users to suddenly not able to use their printers. And then to leave the firmware update out there instead of pulling it back so it doesn't continue to happen is inexcusable. I think HP is just trying to sell more printers. Their level of customer service on an issue that THEY caused it like zero! Very disappointing. Their Quality Assurance department should be fired! The time lost of all the customers screwing around with this issue is unacceptable! But I'm sure because it's an older printer that we all paid a lot of money for - they don't care. Come on HP - you need to treat your customers better than this!

I am equally mad at this situation. Even worse, my printer is still under warranty!
I can not understand the lack of HP support. I go to my web page where all devices are and I don't see any warning or anything regarding this problem and the HP caused all of the printers unusable and don't give a **bleep** about it.
I am apsolutely sure that after this event this is the last HP product in my company. I lost literally days trying to fix network problem because I was sure that my network update did that. I was unfortunate that I did my network upgrade evening before printer auto updated itself so it lead me to a totally wrong direction. Otherwise I would just send it back for warranty.
I was already in search for a new printer. Any that is not a HP.
