Is there likely to be an updated version available within, say, one month that can be downloaded via the printer’s own update function to resolve the issue?
My reason for asking is that I appear to be unable to update using the USB drive I have, or alternatively, the printer’s USB reader may be faulty. The printer also does not seem to freeze immediately even when Wifi is enabled, so I am fairly confident that I will be able to instruct the printer to download an update over the network.

Thanks everyone for the great ideas and suggestions and clarifications. So mad about this, none of us needed this last week. For me, I have a 477 and I needed to use the rear USB for the reflash to work, which I found out after doing everything wrong and getting nowhere fast.

@grindat were your settings retained after the reset?

Thank you everyone for helping me. Finally i found a solution and maybe can I help someone with the same problem "stuck on Verifying". The concept is reset the printer to a factory and then update the firmware.
0. Without internet connection (disconnect the LAN cable and/or turn off the Wireless from "Settings")
1. Go to blue screen "home, back, home, home" while start the printer and pressing the power on button.
2. "Menu" -> "Next" until "Reset Factory"
3. Do the initial configuration and after the installation (about 20/30 min) turn off the printer normally.
4. Insert the USB with the ".ful2" file and try the update through the blue screen (point 1) in "Menu" -> "Reflash"
5. Check that the correct firmware version is installed.
Thank you and have a nice day 🙂

Yes, Repairatrooper, settings were retained. I did not have to reinstall software on my computer and I did not have to reset the printer to factory.
If I had to identify one problem to discuss, it was whether to use the front or back USB, there's conflicting experience here. I started with the back one, but I was using REFLASH instead of MENU, so I was stuck on green screen. When I switched to the front USB and MENU, I got the never ending VERIFYING screen. I finally wound up using the back USB and MENU to reflash, things proceeded fine.
I am using the 477 wireless only. I used the unzipped FUL2 file from Blairuachdair. It was also my experience that the printer did not freeze immediately on restart, so I was able to scan a document in that window, but I was not able to print anything. Thanks again, everyone!

@grindat , I would not expect that you would need to reinstall on the computer, what i was wondering about were fax settings, scan to folder and scan to email settings on the printer itself.

HP sent me this email which worked:
2. Release the power button. Touch Home, Back, Home, Home in that order.
3. When the blue screen appears on the control panel, wait 5 seconds and then touch the Menu button in the lower right corner of the screen.
4. After touching the Menu button, a DRIVE REFLASH screen appears.
5. Place the USB thumb drive with the ful2 file on it into the rear USB port on the printer and touch OK. A green screen displays, indicating that the printer is beginning the firmware upgrade.

I'm stuck on the never-ending "verifying" screen some others have reported. I have so far used three different firmware files posted here, two different USB sticks (all formatted to FAT32) and have used both front and rear USB sockets but every time I am stuck at the "verifying" screen.
I have also tried only inserting the USB stick when the reflash drive menu is on screen.
I have also tried doing a factory reset and letting it complete before then retrying the reflash
Anyone have any other tricks to get this to work?
