Generally, I can see many such issues reported since a recent update with USB printing, I don't even think it affecting HP printers only, could see many similar discussion on Apple's forums for other manufacturers too.

If your printer supports a network connection and that can be tried, please give it a try and see how it goes through a network connection.

Same problem with HP Deskjet Ink Advantage K209a-z and new update Catalina 10.15.7. Did everything listed above, nothing helped. Waiting for a solution!

As I and others said, we are using network connections - Bonjour, Wi-Fi, IP address connections.  Problem is HP's 4 Aug Drivers file is no longer working with Mac Catalina OS 10.15.7   HP need to get updated drivers asap.

Have now managed to get basic level printing back by opting for Generic Postscript Driver installation for Laserjet and Generic PCL Driver for the Photosmart.  But these are clearly sub-optimal and don't provide full functionality of original customised HP drivers.  HP needs to get this deplorable mess sorted with Apple asap.  It simply should not have happened with two mighty tech companies like these that one OS update kills all printer functionality.  Ridiculous lack of testing, lack of customer awareness and costing your customers dozens of wasted hours.  Thank you NOT Apple and HP.  Do better!

Would you mind sharing the steps of getting at the Generic PCL Driver for Photosmart?  I'd be happy just to have basic printing back and would appreciate your pointing me in the right direction!  Thanks in Advance.

Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners

Click + to add printer

Pop up screen should identify your connected printers

Select the one you want

the "Use:" box will start with "Auto Select" then come up with an HP driver. Use the up/down arrows to show other options, which should include "Generic PCL Printer" - select that and click "Add"  and you should be there!

Thanks for your help.  Generic PCL Printer not showing, HD search reveals nothing, and new Apple alerts started yesterday that identify printer software as malware.

Sadly, I think I'll cave and get an AirPrint printer.  Can visualize an HP roundtable where everybody agreed getting consumers to buy new printers was the most "practical" solution to macOS compatibility issues.

UPDATE: Three days later I have ordered a CANON printer.  Have been loyal to HP since its mini computer days of 1980's but this is the final straw.

Shall I just throw my HP printer out of the window then?
