HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Power cord on 6978 all in one printer does not seem secure and falls out with any movement of the printer. I have had several HPs and never had this happen. I don't want to push it too hard but it sure doesn't seem like its in there all the way. Should I push harder? Thanks

Hi @terri46,

Welcome to the HP Support Community

I understand you are facing a power cord issue with your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-In-One Printer. Not to worry I will help you to get a resolution to resolve the issue.

Please turn off the printer and remove the power cord from the wall outlet and the printer once, now go ahead and firmly connect the power cord and check if it is connecting fine.

Make sure the printer is connected to the wall outlet directly and the power cord has enough space for the rest down as seen on the reference picture:

Internal power supply example

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

During setup I did attach the power cord to the printer as firmly as I could but it just does not seem tight. Slightest movement of printer and it falls out. I have never seen an HP printer  power cord do this before. I guess I will just have to be very careful.

@terrib,

Thank you for your response.

  • Are you using the original HP Power Cable which came along with the printer?

Keep me posted.

Yes I am using the power cord that came with the printer although the associate at Best Buy told me there was no power cord included...but yet there was. I appreciate your advice and have done all I can  but the cord is still loose but I will just have to deal with it.  I have had other HP printers and this has never happened.   Sorry but I cannot accept your original solution as there seems to be no solution. Thanks for trying to assist me.

From the description of your interaction at Best Buy I am left with the impression that you purchased a demo or open box unit as all HP printers from the factory come with a power cord. I would suggest you take the unit back to Best Buy and ensure they provide you with the correct power cord. If it does not seat properly, and it should not take a giant effort, then this will predictably be a source of annoyance for the time you own it as it will invariably disconnect that the worst possible times and could eventually cause the unit to fail from being powered off improperly.

That is a good observation. The associate had the printer specs  pulled up on his phone and told me I would need a power cord. I have no clue why. He may have mis-spoken and  meant that I needed a  USB or Ethernet cord  but I used my embedded USB cord and it worked just fine. The printer was totally factory sealed in the box and there was no evidence it had ever been opened. The power cord was wrapped tightly with the 'tie' . The only other thing I can think of is that I bought a 6978 and the specs and info I have found online are for 6970 which seems to be a family of printers'  which the 6978  is a member so maybe the original 6970 may not have come with a power cord although you stated they all do. My printer sits in its own 'cubby hole' in a computer armoire and hopefully I won't be needing to pull it out which would be the only way the cord would get dislodged. I am the only one who uses it. THANKS!
