Every time anyone goes to print anything to this HP printer it doesn't come out and the red light flashes that says attention. The screen is showing 'LOAD TRAY 2 PLAIN LETTER'. I press OK once and then it says 'USE TRAY 2 COLOURED A4' so then I press OK again and one of the documents in the queue prints. I then have to double press OK to get the next document to print.
However, I have checked all my printer options and ensured that they are all set correctly. Paper size, paper source, paper type etc. These are all correct. I have also installed the HP troubleshooting problem (HP scan and print doctor), and ran this, the print test at the end didn't work either, even though it told me there were no problems found.
The only exception is when I print an email, this comes out automatically and I have duplicated the exact printer properties onto word and excel but still no luck with these.
It's extremely infuriating for everyone in my office! We use Windows 7.
Please help!

The configuration report confirms that the printer has paper of size A4 loaded in the two cassette trays, with two different paper types configured (COLOR and PLAIN in trays 2 and 3 respectively).
Tray 1 is configured with size LETTER and type PLAIN. I don't think that this (multi-purpose drop-down) tray auto-detects the size, so this must have been set explicitly.
The first thing to do is decide what paper size you really want to print on:
- Letter size paper is used in America, but in very few other places.
- Most of the rest of the world standardises on A4 paper size.
if you want to change the printer configuration, use the front panel menus, or (as your device is a network model), use the Embedded Web Server: just point a browser at the IP-address of the printer - you should get a home web page, and you can then navigate to the appropriate paper handling page - it may be described in the User Guide manual for your printer.
If you really want to use A4 paper (as appears to be loaded in your cassette trays), then you need to change your print jobs to select this paper size.

The prompt 'LOAD TRAY 2 PLAIN LETTER' implies (I think) that the print job has requested:
- Paper Size = LETTER
- Paper Type = PLAIN
- Paper Source = tray 2 (rather than, for example, printer auto-select)
but that the printer does not believe it has paper of this size and type in that tray.
Aftre pressing "Go", the following prompt 'USE TRAY 2 COLOURED A4' then seems to imply that the printer has been configured to understand that tray 2 contains paper of size A4 and type COLOURED.
On most LaserJet printers:
- The size of paper in each tray is detected automatically (by sensors attached to the paper width and length guides in the tray).
- The type of paper in each tray has to be configured, via the front panel menu system, or Embedded Web Server or Toolbox equivalent mechanisms.
- A Configuration Report can be printed (invoked from the menu system, or equivalent) which should show how the trays are configured.

Thank you for your kind response.
I have printed out the report for the configuration and it says:
Tray 1 Size: LETTER
Tray 1 type: PLAIN
Tray 2 Size: A4
Tray 2 type: COLOR
Tray 3 size: A4
Tray 3 type: PLAIN
So it is not the print job that says these specs, its the printer configuration.
I'm unsure how to change the type of paper in each tray?
I would like all jobs to be sent to tray 2 as it says on the Printer properties.
How can I change the configuration of Tray 2 to A4 PLAIN so that it doesnt tell me to select the alternate option 'USE TRAY 2 COLOURED A4'?
Sorry if this has not been explained clearly- i'm a bit of a novice with printers!

I purchased the HP 477 fnw laser printer. Every time I want to print a document, it requires that I go to the printer and press "OK" to get it to pull the paper from Tray 2 and print my document. Please help me figure out how to get it just to print when I send the print command from my laptop computer. I am using Mac OS 10.1.12. Thanks.
