When I run Print and Scan, it detects 2 printers that are no longer connect to my computer.  How do I remove these old printer references?

My apologies, but my issue was with Smart Print and not the printer/scanner settings in Windows.  I was able to remove the old printers from the Windows side and your solution for this is spot on.

I was finally able to remove the references to my old printers by resetting the Smart Printer software.  As it turns out you can do this in 2 ways.  You can uninstall then reinstall the Smart Print software or you can reset it and reconfigure by following the Smart Print instructions.  It might be helpful to other community members if you post the instructions for resetting Smart Print as you will need to do this when installing a new HP printer.

In any event, I truly appreciate your time and effort in reply to my issue.

Hi @lmdamuth

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

To remove old printer references from the "Print and Scan" settings on your computer, follow the steps based on your operating system:

For Windows 10/11:

Open Settings:

  • Press Win + I to open the Settings app.
  • Alternatively, click on the Start menu and select Settings.

Go to Devices:

  • In the Settings window, click on Devices.

Printers & Scanners:

  • On the left sidebar, click on Printers & scanners.

Remove Old Printers:

  • In the list of printers, you’ll see both active and inactive printers.
  • Find the old printers that are no longer connected, and click on them to select.
  • Click the Remove device button.

Check Printer Queue (Optional):

  • Sometimes, printers are still listed in the print queue.
  • To remove those, click on the Start menu and search for Devices and Printers.
  • In the "Devices and Printers" window, right-click on the old printer(s) and select Remove device.

For macOS:

Open System Settings:

  • Click on the Apple menu in the top-left corner of the screen.
  • Select System Settings (or System Preferences in older versions of macOS).

Printers & Scanners:

  • In the System Settings, select Printers & Scanners.

Remove Old Printers:

  • On the left side, you’ll see a list of connected printers.
  • Click on the old printer(s) you want to remove.
  • Click the minus (-) button at the bottom to remove the printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
