HP Officejet 4500
Microsoft Windows 11

i have a printer - HP Officejet 4500 (ethernet) and a laptop with windows 11. I tried to add printer from devices in settings option but the printer was not detected. Later on I added it manually. But on the printer screen an orange light keeps blinking and on screen it reads - "Print cartridge problem : [black]. Refer to device documentation for troubleshoot"

Any suggestions???

Hi @SB199915,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The error message "Print cartridge problem" on your HP Officejet 4500 typically indicates an issue with the black ink cartridge. Here are a few steps you can try to resolve the problem:

Check the Cartridge Installation:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Open the cartridge access door and carefully remove the black ink cartridge.
  • Check that the cartridge is compatible with your HP Officejet 4500.
  • Ensure that the cartridge has not expired. Look for the "best by" date on the cartridge itself.
  • Reinstall the cartridge, making sure it snaps firmly into place.

Clean the Cartridge Contacts:

  • With the cartridge out, use a clean, lint-free cloth to gently wipe the copper contacts on the cartridge and the contacts inside the printer where the cartridge seats.
  • Avoid touching the ink nozzles or the copper contacts with your fingers.

Reset the Printer:

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  • Wait about 60 seconds, then reconnect the power cord.
  • Turn on the printer if it does not automatically power on. This can help clear error messages.

Check for Firmware Updates:

  • Sometimes, updating the printer’s firmware can resolve cartridge issues. You can check for firmware updates by going to the HP Customer Support website, entering your printer model, and following the instructions for firmware updates.

Replace the Cartridge:

  • If the error persists after cleaning and reseating the cartridge, it might be defective or damaged. Replacing the cartridge with a new one could solve the problem.

Troubleshoot Connection Issues (since your printer wasn't detected initially):

  • Ensure the Ethernet cable is securely connected to both the printer and your router.
  • Check if your printer is assigned an IP address. This can typically be seen on the printer’s display under network settings.
  • Ensure that your laptop's network settings are configured to the same network as your printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
