HP Officejet Pro 8500A Plus
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

My Printer Assistant software will not open for my HP Officejet Pro 8500A Plus printer, which renders communication with the printer and toolbox useless.  The current full featured driver software appears to be installed, and I can print and scan.  However upon launching the Printer Assistant, I receive a Windows dialogue box error that contains: mshta.exe (title)  dialogue "Bad Image".  Then the dialogue details that C:\Windows\System32\userenv.dll is either corrupt or incompatible with the software, followed by 0xc0000428 status code.  I have scanned by system files with sfc /scannow and find no errors.  I have tried completely uninstalling all HP printers, software, registry entries several times with the same result.  This software used to work fine on my Windows 8.1 64-Bit desktop.  All I tried to do was eliminate the USB printer and only connect wirelessly.  Can anyone please help?  Thank you....and I can send a screenshot of the error dialogue if anyone needs to see it.

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Let's run the HP Print and Scan Doctor, which helps in resolving common printing and scanning problems such as missing or corrupt print drivers, connectivity issues etc.

Use this link for details on using the HP Print and Scan doctor: https://hp.care/2JyaC93

If the issue persists, let's do a root uninstall and reinstall of the software:

Unplug any USB cable, if any, before doing this.

1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2.) Select your HP Printer

3.) Select Uninstall

4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose 'Delete' or 'Remove Device'

6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.

7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)

8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab

9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10.) Select Ok

11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12.) Close Devices and Printers

13.)  Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.

14.) Type c:/programdata and click Ok. Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.

15.) Restart the computer.

Once done, please download and install the software from here:

Screenshot mshta.exe error_photo_2019-02-06_9-04-16.jpgThank you for your assistance with the issue I'm having with HP Printer Assistant.  After trying unsuccessfully with HP Print/Scan Doctor to repair my software & printer installation, I attempted the root Printer uninstall and software reinstall as suggested.  Following your instructions, I was successful at reinstalling the network Printer and Scanner.  Unfortunately, however the HP Printer Assistant full featured software still fails to launch.  I continue to receive the attached error message as shown upon attempting to open the software as displayed in the inserted screenshot photo.  Is there anything else you can suggest in order to resolve this issue?

You could uninstall the software and use windows built-in drivers:
