HP LaserJet 1020 Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

I am unable to change the board from Desktop items to "Printer Setup, Software, and Drivers" on the website, so am constrained to this default board.

On 7/12/24 I contacted Hp support regarding a driver for my Hp Laser jet 1020 which I was installing on a new machine. After chatting with a BOT and then a chat respondent , I was told an Hp tech would call me.  I shortly thereafter received a call from a tech.  I explained that I had downloaded a driver but could not complete the install. After asking for the error code I received, he asked for permission  to log into my machine, whereupon he went into the Event Viewer.  He said the "errors" in the event list were malware that was preventing the driver from loading and that I needed a program to remove it. We discussed Malwarebytes and he told me he could put me in touch with someone who could provide the program and install it for me, which he did.  I assumed the contact was an employee from Malwarebytes.  However, after sending them an exorbitant fee,  I soon found that I was not talking to a Malwarebytes rep. but an employee of an "IT support" company, Lumina Tech Venture LLC.  After loading the software, I became suspicious when they told me not to contact Malwarebytes for support but to contact them.  Fortunately, I was able to see the license code they entered for the software, although they did not provide a copy to me.  A subsequent call to the Malwarebytes company revealed that the license was legitimate, but the way they sold me the product was not legitimate.  It was a one year license.  The Lumina tech told me it was a 5 year license for 8 devices.  He installed it only on my desktop computer but said all my other devices (phones, tablets, other computers) were also protected up to 8 devices.  I am attempting to get a refund but must forfeit a "one time service charge" of $249.99 to Lumina!  In further attempt to research this, I found on the Malwarebytes  website, under their Labs section,  a topic on "Tricks you should look out for".   There I found a screen shot of the Event Viewer, explaining it's use by tech support scammers pretending to be Malwarebytes to defraud their victims.  There was also a screen shot of a purchase confirmation that was an exact duplicate of the one I received from Lumina, except for the date and total amount paid!  I believe this scam started with your Hp tech's referral.  He had told me that loading Malwarebytes would be too difficult to be accomplished on my own and recommended Lumina who he said could sell and install it for me.  I was unaware until it was too late, that this was a scam.  My confidence in Hp has been seriously damaged.  And I am not thrilled with the significant $ loss I sustained to learn this lesson.
