Hi @deedot4410,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If you have a new computer and need a printer driver for an old HP LaserJet 5000 series printer, you can follow these steps to find and install the appropriate driver.
- Visit HP's Official Website: Go to the official HP Support website: https://support.hp.com/
- Enter Printer Model: In the search bar, enter your printer model, in this case, HP LaserJet 5000.
- Select Your Operating System: Choose your operating system from the list. Make sure to select the version that matches the one installed on your new computer.
- Download the Driver: Look for the "Driver" or "Software" section on the product support page. Download the latest driver available for your operating system.
- Install the Driver: Once the driver is downloaded, run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions to install the driver.
If you encounter any issues or cannot find a driver for your specific operating system on the HP website, you can try the following alternative.
- Windows Update (for Windows users): Connect your computer to the internet and go to "Settings" > "Update & Security" > "Windows Update." Check for updates, and Windows might automatically download and install the necessary driver.
- Generic PCL Printer Driver: You can try using a generic PCL (Printer Command Language) driver if a specific driver for your model is not available. Many HP printers support PCL, and the generic driver might work.
Remember that these instructions are general, and the steps might vary slightly based on your operating system. Always refer to the specific documentation provided by HP for your printer model and your computer's operating system for the most accurate information.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Installing on network or USB? Windows should have a built in driver but you need to tell the system to search windows update when installing. The HP UPD driver is another option to consider.
