What works:
- all HP Tools including HP Print and Scan Doctor
- Alignment test page (including black)
- Printing images from Paintshop Pro
- Printing images using Windows
- Printing plain text from Text Editor
- Acrobat Reader PDFs that contain only images
What doesn't work:
- Printing from Word or Excel
- Acrobat Reader PDFs containing text
- Windows Printer test page
While the Windows printer test displays the message that the page could not be printed, Word, Excel etc. don't display an error message and just don't print.
Tried this on 2 computers (both Windows 10) using the HP drivers and the drivers from Windows update. A different (non HP) printer works without problems.

Found the solution in another forum post.
If the Windows TEMP directory is changed from it's default location (e.g. to D:\TEMP) one needs to explicitly set 'Full Access' for the current user in the windows security settings for D:\TEMP.
