I'm going to give you a very detailed way around this. Including pictures.
First of all turn on your printer scanner. Lift up the flatbed and put what you want to scan underneath it. Close it.
Ignore your printer scanner unless it goes on sleep or you need to change what you're scanning.
Go up to the Apple in the left-hand corner and click system preferences. Picture below.
You will see a bunch of icons. Click on the printer. This picture below is what you will see next.
Click on printer scanner and you will see the following screen below
Be sure that you click on scan. This is the screen you shall see. Below.
If it says after a while that the scan failed don't panic just start again by clicking scan from that print window through the system preferences. This is what you will see (sometimes you start seeing the screen I'm showing you below and don't see the screen that says waiting for scanner)
.
When the screen finishes I'm going to show you below the screen you will get.
You still have to click the word scan at the bottom right on the screen to scan the item into your computer. Your scan will go where ever you have set up the scan to go I have them set up to go on my desktop. It is better not to download stuff you don't know who is sending you what there's nothing to download there's nothing to worry about and fat I think it's faster than using the machine itself as I used to do. I like it. But I thought to that there would be no way to use this printer scanner with this Catalina it is fun define things like this and very satisfying. I hope this helps.

I just spent a long time with HP support and $39 to have them tell me that my HP (which is fairly new) scanner will not work with my Mac Catalina system now. SERIOUSLY?!!! I think I just learned the hard way never to invest in an HP printer/scanner ever again for my business. How does a company that makes devices to connect with computers not have updates of their own for when Mac updates their products?

That's a shame!!! My printer is over five years old and I was able when I did it through System Preferences use the HPScanner via my computer without downloading anything or paying anybody. Did you try the steps I left above? I have a desktop I don't know if that makes a difference. Maybe you are using a laptop. All I know is my desktop Will scan when I turn on the Hewlett Packard scanner and put the document in the flatbed. I am sorry this did not work for you I don't know why it wouldn't. I would not download anything I don't know who's putting these links on. And I didn't want to pay anything. Maybe you have to get a new printer scanner. Do you have anybody in the family who knows anything about computers?

I have no solution (other than using the Image Capture process suggested by other users). BUT how come Apple has does nothing to solve this??? Easy Scan on HP printers worked just fine with Mojave OS. We all got screwed when we updated to Catalina. How about this, Apple???

Hi Maryjaye, thanks for your comments. The solutions I have used which work (for me ) both printing and scanning involve using HP Smart App.
Should say my printer is wireless.
1. Anything I which to print from my Mac, simply upload it to Google Drive and print using HP Smart app on my Android phone; print from there. To scan- I use my phone ( with HP Smart), upload image from phone to Google Drive then download on Mac.
2. (which is better) To connect Mac and Printer, from System Preferences on Mac select printers and scanners, then add printer using IP address of printer As NAME, also IP address as Location, then use HP Smart app to control both printing and scanning.
It seems the HP Smart App is the key.
Cheers

Dealed way of solving it with pictures and words on page 13 of this thread did you try that? It is really the same solution I gave you here but is very detailed showing you what to do. Good luck and I'm sorry if it doesn't work. Do you have a desktop? That's what I have maybe you have a laptop and maybe that's why it doesn't work?

These solutions do not work for me. I am running macOS Catalina 10.15.1 & have an HP Officejet 8600. My printer has been essentially DISABLED as a scanner since I upgraded to Catalina. Super disapointed 2 months has passed and HP has not figured out how to solve this (or if they have that they have not sent out an update). I am seriously considering abandoning HP altogether - have always had difficulties with my Mac and HP.
