HP Laptop 15-bw0xx with HP LaserJet 1018
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,

How do I get a HP LaserJet 1018 from "Unspecified" devices to show up under printers?

It appears as if HP no longer supports this printer, I downloaded the drivers from a third party site.

@Clint418, Welcome to HP Support Community!

I recommend you delete the driver and root level and retry, follow the steps below:

1) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2) Select your HP Printer

3) Select Uninstall

4) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose ‘Delete’ or ‘Remove Device’

6) Open up the run command with the “Windows key + R” key combo.

7) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe”

😎 Click on the “Drivers” tab

9) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10) Select Ok

11) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12) Close Devices and Printers.

Follow the steps below:

•    Go to Control Panel - Devices and printers - Click on "Add printer" and follow the on-screen instructions.

•    When the page prompts for the drivers, select "Windows update". The driver list will be updated.

•    Click HP, Hewlett Packard, or Hewlett-Packard in the Manufacturer pane, and then click the name of your printer in the Printers pane.

Hello,

A couple of problems.

1. I had to force uninstall under programs.

2. Icon wasn't showing under "Unspecified devices."

3. No drivers found using run command.

4 When I went to "add printer" all of a sudden it was there under "Unspecified devices." (I removed it)

5. I rebooted. Message came "HP laserjet 1018 set up and ready to go."

6. Back under "Unspecified devices."

7. Removed.

8, Add printer - "no devices found" - (printer on and connected via USB)

Hi Clint418,

I understand the printer shows up under unspecified devices.

Please try the below steps to resolve the issue -

Update the printer driver

  1. Press the Windows logo key + R on your keyboard > type devmgmt.msc in the Run box and hit Enter to open the Device Manager.
  2. In the top menu, click View > select Show hidden devices.device manager printer is unspecified device
  3. Expand the Printers menu > Right-click on the available device > select Update driver.update printer driver printer is unspecified device
  4. Alternatively, you can select to Uninstall driver, restart the computer and it will automatically reinstall the printer‘s driver.

Update Windows

  1. Press the Start button > open Settings.
  2. Click Update & Security.
  3. Select Windows Update
  4. Click Check for updatescheck for windows updates printer is unspecified device
  5. If it finds any updates, let it complete the process and restart your computer
  6. After rebooting your PC, check if updating Windows fixed the issue
