HP mfp 3301: Printer keeps going into a deep sleep mode. Then I have to unplug it then plug it back in, to have wake it up. Touching screen does nothing. Power button won't shut it off or on.

Hi @dad1973,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I know how frustrating it is when your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3301 goes into deep sleep and won’t wake up unless you unplug it. Let’s walk through the most effective solutions to fix this.

1. Change Sleep Mode Settings

You can adjust how quickly the printer enters sleep mode or disable deep sleep entirely:

  • On the printer’s touchscreen, swipe down to open the dashboard.
  • Tap the Settings icon → scroll to Sleep Mode.
  • Set a longer time (e.g., 60 minutes) or disable deep sleep if available.

2. Update Printer Firmware

HP has released firmware updates to fix sleep/wake issues.

3. Use HP Embedded Web Server (EWS)

If the touchscreen is unresponsive, you can access the printer’s settings via its IP address:

  • Find the printer’s IP address from your router or the HP Smart app.
  • Enter it in a browser to open the Embedded Web Server.
  • Go to Settings > Power Management and adjust sleep settings.

4. Perform a Power Reset

If the printer is stuck:

  • Unplug the printer from power.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and power it on.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Thank you for the responsse, but the root cause is not resolved. Printer has the latest firmware that is available, sleep time extended, but when the printer goes to slepp it will not wake up. The only work-around appears to be to disable "Auto Shut Off". Now when the printer goes to slepp it can be worken back up without having to unplug the printer form AC Power Source.
