Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My printer has stopped copying, scanning and only prints sporadically- usually after shutting down and rebooting, it will print everything in the queue, but is unpredictable.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the driver when the computer suddenly stopped recognizing the printer even thought it was on, connected and nothing had changed. In order to be recognized I have to turn it off, then back on, and then it will be 'connected' for an amount of time before becoming unrecognized.

Is this just planned obsolescence of a 4 year old mfp machine?

Hi @BlueSkySolution,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It's frustrating when your printer starts experiencing issues, especially when it seems to be happening suddenly after a few years of use. While it's easy to feel like it might be planned obsolescence, there could be several reasons why your printer is behaving this way:

1. Driver Issues:

  • Uninstalling and reinstalling the printer driver was a good first step, but sometimes, simply reinstalling the driver might not resolve all issues. Ensure that you have the latest driver version installed from the manufacturer's website. Sometimes, compatibility issues with newer operating system updates can also cause problems.

2. Connection Issues:

  • The intermittent recognition of the printer could be due to connectivity issues. Check the USB cable or wireless connection between the printer and your computer. Ensure that the connections are secure and that there are no loose cables.

3. Printer Settings:

  • Review the printer settings on both your computer and the printer itself. Ensure that the printer is set as the default printer and that there are no settings that could be causing the printing delays or sporadic behavior.

4. Firmware Updates:

  • Check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer on the HP website. Updating the printer's firmware can sometimes resolve performance issues and improve compatibility with your computer.

5. Hardware Issues:

  • Over time, hardware components of the printer, such as the print head or rollers, can wear out and cause issues like printing sporadically or not at all. However, four years is relatively young for a printer, so this might not be the most likely cause.

6. Environmental Factors:

  • Environmental factors such as dust, temperature, or humidity levels can also affect the performance of your printer. Ensure that the printer is placed in a well-ventilated area and is not exposed to extreme conditions.

7. Printer Maintenance:

  • Perform routine maintenance tasks such as cleaning the print head, aligning the printer, and checking for paper jams. Sometimes, simple maintenance tasks can resolve printing issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
