macOS 12.0 Monterey

Apple upgraded my OS and now I cannot open my printer or scanner. I downloaded HP's latest driver software but that did not help. My Mac is only about two years old so I don't think I should have to buy a new one. What should I do?

@Maya2025, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're experiencing issues with your HP printer after a macOS upgrade, which is a common problem due to compatibility changes or permission settings. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you resolve the issue:

Step-by-Step Fix

Check Compatibility

First, confirm that your HP printer is compatible with the new macOS version (e.g., macOS Sonoma, Ventura, etc.):

  • Visit HP support page and search for your printer model and check for the macOS compatibility.

Remove and Reinstall the Printer

A. Delete the existing printer:

  1. Go to System Settings (or System Preferences on older macOS).
  2. Open Printers & Scanners.
  3. Select your HP printer, then click Remove (-).

B. Re-add the printer:

  1. Ensure your printer is powered on and connected via USB or the same Wi-Fi as your Mac.
  2. Click the Add (+) button.
  3. Let it auto-detect the printer, and choose the default AirPrint or Secure AirPrint driver if available.

Reset the Printing System (if issues persist)

⚠️ Warning: This will delete all printers, scanners, and print queues.

  1. Open Printers & Scanners.
  2. Right-click (or Control-click) in the printer list.
  3. Choose Reset Printing System.
  4. Reboot your Mac, then re-add the printer.

Check for Scanner Support (Image Capture)

Try using the Image Capture app (built into macOS):

  • Open Image Capture from Applications.
  • Check if your HP scanner appears in the list.
  • If not, reinstall the HP Easy Scan or HP Smart app from the Mac App Store.

Grant Permissions

After macOS upgrades, permissions may need to be re-enabled:

  1. Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Full Disk Access and Files and Folders.
  2. Ensure HP-related apps (e.g., HP Smart, HP Easy Scan) are checked.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
