I have an MFP M283fdw with region set as Austria. I now live in Australia and want to change the region so I can purchase local print cartridges. HP FAQs reference a way to do this by connecting to a computer to run HP software, however I don't have a computer. I'd like to find a way to do this with just my smartphone and printer.

Hi @Craig2600,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand you have moved from Austria to Australia, and want to perform a regional reset,

Please note: Regional reset cant not be performed on phones; you need to have a Windows PC, only then can the reset be performed.

Regional Reset details

Ok To perform a printer region reset, you need to meet the following conditions:

1. The printer should be connected using a printer USB cable to the computer.
2. You need to have the printer's full feature software installed on your computer.
3. You need to have all the cartridges either from the region/country from where the printer was purchased originally or the new region/country to which you want to reset it.
4. Make sure the HP Smart App is installed too.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you VikramTheGreat. I have a follow up question. My printer needs a replacement cyan cartridge, whereas the other three cartridges will be OK for some time. Therefore, I'd like to be able use the three 207x from Austria that has many pages left, and simply purchase a 206A cyan. When I change the region setting to Australia will the other three in place 207x cartridges immediately become incompatible?

Hi @Craig2600,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

HP LaserJet printers are region-locked based on toner cartridge codes. When you first install a toner cartridge, the printer aligns itself to the region associated with that cartridge series — for example, 207X from Austria (EMEA region) or 206A for Australia (APJ region).

If you were to change the printer’s region setting to Australia:

  • The existing 207X cartridges already installed would unfortunately become incompatible and stop working immediately after the region reset.
  • From that point, the printer would only accept APJ region cartridges like 206A/206X.

In other words, mixing 207X and 206A cartridges isn’t supported after a region change.
This is because the chip in each toner cartridge carries region information, and the printer can only work with one region type at a time.

If you'd like, I can help check your printer’s current region status or guide you through a region reset if needed — just let me know!

Thank you again VikramTheGreat. I have now borrowed a laptop and have made a usb connection to the printer and have opened the region reset window. I am now presented with a code reset field requiring a different code against 41, 42, 43, 44, ,45, 51 (see attached). I have printed a configuration report and can't see anything that corresponds with Themistocles code.

I'd appreciate your assistance with this next step.
