Hi team,

I use this USB port in the front of the printer to store scanned documents and since the printer is shared in the network, I can see the memory_stick in the network, from there I can map it as a network drive and use it as just another mapped folder in my PC and it works like a charm.

When it comes to the Mac, the Mac does show the Printer in the "shared" list in the finder. I have also enabled Printer sharing in system preferences. However I am able to see connect as dialogue, I am unable to connect to the printer usb port. Is there a way to make this work on the Mac? What should be the user and password for this to connect?

Please and thank you.

Thank you very much for your patience. 🙂

If you downgrade the MAC to use SMB1 it would work.  But this will downgrade SMB and any file sharing that uses SMB2 will stop working.

Here is the command to downgrade.  Please note that I would caution against it and use at your own discretion.

Type in the command below in terminal. Customer will need to enter his password after entering the command:

sudo sh -c "echo '[default]' >> /etc/nsmb.conf; echo 'smb_neg=smb1_only' >> /etc/nsmb.conf"

Reboot the MAC afterwards and then perform the previous steps that I have given.

Cheers!

@Kamshah

Thanks for reaching out to us on HP Support Forums. 🙂 I came across your post and would like to help.

I understand that you have an HP Officejet Pro 8610 e-All-in-One Printer and are able to use the USB flash drive connected to it as a network drive and use it as just another mapped folder through a Windows computer. However, you're unable to accomplish this when using a Mac. I appreciate the steps you have performed and have certainly done a good job.

I would like to know the following information to assist you better:

  • Are you able to print from your Mac?
  • Any errors received?

Meanwhile, I will need additional time to investigate this case and check if USB flash drive connected to it as a network drive and mapped folder from a Mac.

I will get back to you once I get more information. Thanks for your patience in the meantime. Cheers!

@Kamshah

So here is what I got:

  1. Make sure that MAC OS is updated
  2. Connect the printer and the PC to the same router, and then the printer get the IP address (e.g. 192.168.1.200).
  3. Make sure the ping is successful between the PC and printer's IP address.
  4. Use "cifs://192.168.1.200" or "smb://192.168.1.200" to access the memory device inserted in the printer via "connect to server" on Mac OS.

The above steps are the ones that were used in earlier MAC OS.  For some time, the function became incompatible on MAC due to SMB (Server Message Block) version used on the newer MAC OS.  Based on the research, were waiting for Apple to fix this or they would just turn the technology obsolete for MAC.

Just additional info: MAC OS X 10.8 and below uses SMB1, while MAC OS X 10.9 and above uses SMB2.  Also, other brands with the same functionality might experience the same issue on the MAC environment.

Please do let me know if the steps above fixes the issue.
