HP officeJet Pro 8020
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

After a Microsoft update, the printer settings for my 8020 no longer work.  Some pieces work but HP Smart fails after I select my printer model in setup.  Setup doesn't complete and I get a "we're sorry, something went wrong.  Can't load HP Smart".

The wireless network is fine

I can still (surprisingly) print from my cell phone.

Printer setup doesn't complete and I get the error message each time

1. Can I install the printer drivers without HP Smart?  How?

2. What could be wrong?

3. I can't find HP Smart in programs to uninstall and hopefully reinstall it

Help??  Thanks in advance.  Any suggestions?

@WISC5000, Welcome to the HP Support Community! I’m here to help.

I understand you are not able to complete the printer setup and the HP Smart app is not working.

For assistance with first-time printer setup, click here.

Have you tried reinstalling the HP Smart app?

HP Smart app will not be listed under programs as it is just an app.

Search Windows for 'HP Smart', uninstall it, and download the latest version from Microsoft Store.

Yes, you can install the printer without using the HP Smart app.

Click here to download the HP Full-feature driver.

Once downloaded, make sure to run the file to start the installation and follow the on-screen instructions.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

The actual solution I used to get my printer working was to copy an older version of the printer config.dll file to the /3 file folder and it worked perfectly.   I didn't have to register the *.dll file, just copy and paste.   I found the fix I used by searching Google for the error code 08xxxx.  If I had seen it earlier, I would have tried the suggested fix of removing HP Smart and reinstalling it but I was desperate after spending 6+ hours trying to find a solution.  Copy and paste seemed worth a shot!  Thanks to HP community.  Desperate people do desperate things (foolishly) and I was.  I told myself the worst case scenario would be to uninstall WIN10 and run the upgrade from WIN7 again.  Time to update restore files again.
