I am trying to configure a usb printer connection on my HP 4220e printer. The dialogue box on my Chromebook suggests I need to use a PPD driver file

Hi @Joe1080,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

To configure your HP DeskJet 4220e via USB on a Chromebook, you usually do not need a PPD file; ChromeOS supports HP printers natively. Connect the printer via USB, go to Settings > Advanced > Printing > Printers, and select your printer.

Steps to Resolve PPD Request (USB Connection)

  1. Ensure Physical Connection: Plug the USB cable directly into the Chromebook (or via a trusted adapter).

  2. Access Printer Settings: Click the time in the bottom-right corner, select the Settings (gear icon), then go to Advanced > Printing > Printers.

  3. Manual Setup: If the printer appears under "Available Printers" but fails to configure, click Add and select it.

  4. Selecting PPD: When prompted, select Manufacturer: HP and Model: HP DeskJet 4200 Series (or a similar 4200 series) from the list. ChromeOS uses this to understand the printer's capabilities.

I hope this will help.

Take care and have a good day.

This doesn´t work. The 4220e does not come up on the list of options on the Chromebook and the dialogue explains that a generic dpd driver file is the only way to connect it.

I can make the usb connection but when I send items to print a printer unavailble message comes up

Hi @Joe1080

1. You may need to install HP Printer Service Plugin from the next link:

2. Once installed that HP Printer plugin then follow steps from the next video:
