I would love to make the decisions on how my printer works.  I may not have money to replace the ink needed for color printing. Black may be just fine at the time. But, without the color ink, it will not function. I paid for a working printer at all times not to keep running to purchase the color ink.  The ink already is costly. If the printer uses the black ink only at times, then I would be ok with it printing just black. I will never purchase any of the HP products again.

@962ink, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

I understand your concerns about ink costs and the frustration of needing color ink when you only want to print in black. Here are steps to configure your HP printer to print using only black ink:

Step 1: Set Printer to Grayscale

Windows Settings:

  • Open the document you want to print.
  • Click File, then Print.
  • Select your HP printer from the list of available printers.
  • Click Properties or Preferences.
  • Look for an option labeled Print in Grayscale, Black & White, or Mono.
  • Select this option to use only the black ink cartridge.

Step 2: Adjust Printer Settings in HP Smart App

Using HP Smart App:

  • Download and open the HP Smart app on your device.
  • Access your printer settings.
  • Go to Advanced Settings or Printer Preferences.
  • Look for the option to print in black only or grayscale.
  • Set the printer to use only the black ink cartridge.

Step 3: Cartridge and Maintenance Settings

Ensure Black Ink Cartridge is Installed:

  • Ensure that the black ink cartridge is correctly installed.
  • Even if the color ink cartridge is empty, some HP printers may require it to be present. However, setting to grayscale will prioritize black ink usage.
