LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw connected via USB. After some period of inactivity, the printer becomes unavailable, and I can't find any way to bring it back online other than turning it off via the power switch and back on again, which takes some time. This is even if the touch screen says it's ready. OS and HP tools will say it's offline and it will not respond to print jobs. (This is just one of the printer's annoying idiosyncrasies, but it's the most irritating; wish Samsung still made printers.) There are printer settings for how long before it sleeps (currently set to 5 minutes) and how long before it shuts down (set to 8 hours, the max), but since it never really seems to turn off altogether, I don't understand why it won't come back to life when called upon. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to HP Support Community

I would like to help

Please ensure the printer has the latest Firmware https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/ish_1776648-1643972-16

Next assign a Manual IP Address

1) Obtain the IP address of the printer – You can print a Network Configuration page to obtain the IP address.

2) Type the IP address on your web browser to obtain the printer EWS page on your computer.

3) Go to "Network" tab - General - Select "Network protocols" - Select "Enable IPv4 only" (or similar) - Apply the settings.

4) Go to the “Network” tab – Click on “Wireless (802.11) – Then click on “Network address (IPv4)

5) Click Manual IP

6) If you see a Suggest a Manual IP Address button, click Manual IP address, and the Manual IP addresses are automatically filled out for you.

7) If your page does not have a button to suggest a manual IP address, type the IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway using the numbers shown in the report you printed.

Keep me posted

Thank you

Updated firmware to latest (as of 10 April) when I installed the printer. It is connected via USB, not network.

Have you tried assigning the manual IP Address?

The printer does not have an IP address. It is not connected via a network, so no IP address is involved. It is connected directly to the computer via a USB port. USB connections do not have IP addresses, manually set or otherwise.

I suggest you reset the printing system on your Mac https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c01371980 and then re-add the printer

Please note that AnnieFlower's problem is separate and different from mine. I don't know why she's posting in this thread.
