I have had an Officejet Pro 8600 for a number of years. Last year I changed my computer and operating system to Windows 8.1 and had to download and update drivers. The printer continued to work well.
However, recently when printing in colour, the printer will not print green or blue. The ink cartridges are ok, I have cleaned the printheads and even manually cleaned them. I have unistalled the printer twice and reinstalled the drivers. The first couple of times it prints green and blue ok but then changes to red/pink.
I have done all the tests which say that the ink levels and printheads are ok.
Has the printer reached the end of the line, or is there anything else I can do before consigning it to printer heaven?

Hello, @SMac49 – Hope you are well 🙂
Thanks for engaging in the HP Support Forums! I’d like to help with the printer issue!
Going through your post, I understand that you are not able to print in certain colors with your Officejet printer. To assist you with this issue, I need to know whether the printer can make a "Photocopy" or not.
Place a color document face down on the scanner glass and press the color copy option on the printer control panel. Let me know if it makes a good copy or not.
If the copy also fails, then the issue is with the printer hardware / cartridges. You have already performed all the hardware troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue like cleaning the print head both manually and using the automated tool. Hence I would suggest you check with new cartridges.
If the copy comes out fine, then the issue is with the print settings or with the drivers on your PC. Try the steps below to perform a clean install:
- First, unplug the USB cable from the printer if present.
- Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Officejet printer entries and uninstall them.
- Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.
- Press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" (There is a space between .exe & /) and press enter.
- Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
- Again, go to the Run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
- Restart your computer.
- Now click http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/COL40120/bi-108858-4/OJ8600_1315-1.exe to install the software.
- Connect the USB cable if prompted and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
Those steps should do the trick, let me know the outcome!
Good luck 🙂

Hello, @SMac49
I was actually giving the steps for Officejet Pro 8600 series printer since you only mentioned 8600 on your first post. If you have the K8600 then, the steps are not relevant for your printer.
I found a good document which will help you troubleshoot this issue. You can try the steps listed here: http://hp.care/2t6iFyx
Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance!
Cheers 🙂

I appreciate your taking the time to try and help me.
I have gone through the steps in the link you sent me. Whn I print the Print Quality Diagnostic Page,in Test Pattern 2, all the colours are shown except blue and green and there are no streaks or white lines across any of them. However instead of black, dark grey and light grey, it shows black, light brown and pink.
On Test pattern 3 instead of grey, it is coming out pink.
When I previously unstalled the printer and downloaded the driver and software on two occasions, the green and blue printed perfectly on the Diagnostics page for two pages, then disappeared so I can't think it is the printheads.
I am loathe to spend over £70 on a new printhead if it is not the problem as I could put the money to a new printer.

Hello, @SMac49
It certainly looks like a hardware issue with the print head / printer 😞
I'd suggest you go for an upgraded model printer since you can get a printer for the price of the print head.
You can contact the HP phone support to get more printer service options or upgrade options.
HP Technical Support can be reached by clicking on the following link: http://h22207.www2.hp.com/us-en/?openCLC=true
(1) Once the support page opens please select the country in which you're located. Next, enter your HP model number on the right.
(2) Next, choose the 'Contact Support' tab at the top and scroll down to the bottom of the 'HP Support- Contact' page to fill out the form provided with your contact information.
(3) Once completed click the 'Show Options' icon on the bottom right.
(4) Lastly, scroll down to the bottom of the page and select 'Get phone number.' A case number and phone number will now populate for you.
I hope that answers your concern adequately. Let me know!
Good luck 🙂

I have had an Officejet Pro 8710. It did a software upgrade on the printer a few weeks ago now it does not print green and most colours are not right. Red prints magenta. The ink cartridges are ok, I have cleaned the printheads several times. I have unistalled the printer and reinstalled the drivers. I have done all the tests which say that the ink levels and printheads are ok. The printer is now also locked in to original cartridges only.
Is there a solution?
thank you
