HP OfficeJet 6963 All-in-One
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My home network has 2 subnets, one for wired and another for wireless.

Wireless: 172.16.3.0/24

Wired: 172.16.2.0/24

The printer is setup on the wireless subnet (IP=172.16.3.140), and wireless devices can print just fine. Wired devices are unable to communicate with the printer as it does not seem to be able to connect back to the wired subnet the computer I'm trying to print from is located on wired connection at  172.16.2.101. It's important to note that the printer is allowed access through the firewall to the wired subnet, and the subnet mask has been modified manually to 255.255.0.0.

@xnite

Thank you for posting on HP Forums,
The Riddle_Decipher is at your service.

As I Understand the printer doesn't work with the wired subnet,

Don't worry as I've found an article that should help resolve your concern,

Step one: Check the requirements

Before installing the driver, make sure you have a functioning network router and an Ethernet cable.

  1. Make sure you have a network router, switch, or hub with available Ethernet ports.

  2. Make sure your computer is connected to the router, switch, or hub, if it is not already connected.

  3. Obtain an Ethernet cable. Do not use a standard telephone cable.

I have the same problem above. I can configure a TCP/IP Port on windows (using the printer IP address of the Wireless network) and I can print from directly from windows. The problem is that HP Smart does not give you an option to manually enter the IP Address of the printer, instead it is looking for printers on the the broadcast domain of the PC (in my case (192.168.0.0/24)... however, the printer is on the subnet (192.168.1.0/24). Therefore I cannot Scan a document to the PC (works on my iPad, Iphone, as they are on the same subnet).

PLEASE, don't tell me to connect a ethernet cable to the PC to the router, I'm a network engineer.... I know the difference between an ethernet cable and a phone cable, and I'm sedning you this email from that PC! I can PING the printer from my PC.

The question here is: can you use HP Smart to connect to a printer that is NOT on the same subnet? Bascally I want to enable the Scanner more than printing, as WIndows is a bit smarter than HP "Smart" and allows me to set the printer's IP.

I wound up hooking up a wireless ap to my switch so that wireless connections to that ap are on the same subnet. I now use the built in wifi as guest wifi for people that come over.

I have the same issue with the scanning software that comes with the printer.

My wifi printer wlan is on 192.168.99.100.

My PC is on 192.168.50.100.

My PC can see the HP status using http://192.168.99.100 and can ping to the printer no issue.

Using the HP Smart software, it can't find the printer.

I did try to setup the printer using the IP and it prints fine from the PC on a separate VLAN.

The issue is with the HP Scan software, can't find it.

Is there a fix for this?  I dont want to put the printer into the same subnet.

Please advise.

Changing the subnet will not solve the problem, since in that case the computer would not send the traffic to the default gateway and it would not receive a response to the arp request sent out because the two devices are not on the same broadcast domain.
At the end of the day, wireless networks are not very secure and you don’t want to have your servers on the same subnet as your wireless network, instead it is good practice to segregate the two and have FWs in between. However, HP assumes the users and printer are going to be on the same broadcast domain, and so, when they are not... it doesn’t work! In order for this to work, we would need a change on the HP software, so good luck with that.
