HP 8020 Printer
Chrome OS

This is an older model HP Office Jet Pro, Model 8020.  About 10 years old I think.  I just received from Amazon, 3 new color cartridges.  The are HP cartridges, NOT generic replacements.   When I installed them, the printer screen acknowledged them as genuine HP.   So..why won't the printer print in color at all.   Never had this problem before.  I've done all the configurations ( print black/white or color) on my computer.  Is there something I'm  missing with the printer that has to be configured?   If so, I sure can't find it.  HELP!!!

@Mart31, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

We understand that your HP OfficeJet Pro 8020 not printing in color on Chrome OS, even though it recognizes the new genuine HP cartridges, Here’s a step-by-step guide to help resolve the issue,

Check Printer Settings on Chrome OS

Make sure the print settings are not defaulting to black and white:

  • Open the document or image you want to print.
  • Press Ctrl + P to open the print dialog.
  • Click “More settings”.
  • Ensure “Color” is selected instead of “Black and white”.

Use HP Smart App to Check Ink Levels and Settings

Install the HP Smart app on your mobile device or another computer:

  • Download HP Smart App - HP Smart
  • Add your printer and check:
    • Ink levels
    • Printhead health
    • Color settings

Run Print Quality Diagnostic

You can print a Print Quality Diagnostic Page directly from the printer:

  • On the printer control panel, swipe left and tap Setup (gear icon).
  • Tap Reports > Print Quality Report.
  • Check if colors appear on this page. If not, it may indicate a printhead issue.

Clean the Printhead

If the diagnostic page shows missing colors:

  • On the printer, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Clean Printhead.
  • Run the cleaning cycle and try printing again.

Update Firmware

Outdated firmware can cause printing issues:

Reset the Printer

Sometimes a simple reset helps:

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Unplug it from power for 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and power it on.

I hope the information shared has been useful and resolves your concern.

Wishing you a smooth and hassle-free experience ahead!
