When I go to Print Documents, I do not get the option to print a page or two of a multipage document. I have tried Ctl P, which gives the option but the printer doesn't work using that control

Your post did not capture your Printer Model and Operating System/version.

-- Based on what we know --

Cntrl-P pulls the current print settings and tries to use those settings for the current print job.

Depending on the printer, the installation status of apps and software, the current paper size / type settings, Cntrl-P can be used to print.

If the driver in those settings is not selected as expected, if the content type, paper, tray, or other configurations are other than what is needed for the current job, the submission might balk, fail, issue errors, and / or behave as if you missed a step or setting.

Sometimes Cntrl-P will open the standard Microsoft Print Pictures dialog for printing photos / images.  If the action opens Print Pictures and photo printing is the goal, the settings can be adjusted and the job submitted.

In general, it is best to open your PDF / document in an application or software (program) that is able to interpret the content and provide the settings you need to print.

For example,

-- Important --

  • Printer Properties > Tab Advanced > Driver should be set to the installed HP Driver (and not the IPP / Microsoft driver).    Optional
  •  Printer_Properties_Reprint_18Printer_Properties_Reprint_18
  • With a correct Printer Properties setup, an appropriate application for the content type might at least open the (PDF) file you select and provide you the options to configure a PDF print job.

Next,

If the full driver printer software is not installed,

  • Windows - PDF - HP Smart / HP App can be used to open and print a PDF file.
  • -- Note -- The app might provide a reduced set of available settings -- Although HP Smart / HP App is not directly dependent on the full driver printer software having been installed, the app certainly benefits when the full range of Printing Preferences are available.

OR

If the full driver printer software is installed,

  • The document can be Exported and Printed as a PDF using a print application -- for example HP App or Adobe Reader DC.
  •  PDF_Reader_Main_Menu_Border_11PDF_Reader_Main_Menu_Border_11

OR

  • The document can be printed from within Word  > Custom print / Page RangeWord_Print_Pages_1-4_Duplex_3Word_Print_Pages_1-4_Duplex_3

and / or

  • The document can be printed from your Browser -- Most browsers include a Page Range setting.  Firefox_Print_Web_Page_11Firefox_Print_Web_Page_11
