Microsoft Windows 11

Hi, I own an HP Deskjet 2620 and I moved from windows 10 to windows 11. I installed the Full_Webpack-43.4.2486-DJ2600_Full_Webpack software and drivers file and it appears to have completed successfully. However when I click the desktop icon that the installation created , I get a system popup asking me to choose which application should handle .hta files. If I choose Firefox or another browser, a script is opened as plain text in the browser whereas I suppose it should be run. In Windows 10 I never experienced this problem. The shortcut launches "C:\Program Files\HP\HP DeskJet 2600 series\Bin\HP DeskJet 2600 series.exe" -Start UDCDevicePage so I do not see how an hta files might come in.

Anybody knows what is causing it and how to solve?

Thanks in advance.

Massimo

Hi @CMassimo,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand you’re encountering a known issue with .HTA (HTML Application) files on Windows 11, especially after upgrading from Windows 10. Here's what we can try to fix it:

Reassociate .HTA Files with mshta.exe:

🔧 Method 1: Manually Set the Association

  1. Right-click the .hta file (or the shortcut that triggers it).
  2. Choose Open with > Choose another app.
  3. Click More apps > Look for another app on this PC.
  4. Navigate to: C:\Windows\System32\mshta.exe
  5. Select it and check "Always use this app to open .hta files".
  6. Click OK.

🔧 Method 2: Use Command Prompt to Reassociate

  1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
  2. Run this command: assoc .hta=htafile
                                    ftype htafile="%SystemRoot%\System32\mshta.exe" "%1" %*

This will restore the correct file association for .hta files.

I hope this helps.

Take care, and have an amazing day!

Hi sorry but I did not have a possibility to use my PC until today. Unfortunately, the mshta.exe file cannot be found in the C:\windows\system32 folder so neither solution works. I have no idea why it is not there.

Hi, I had a chance to move to the 24H2 version of win11 and now the exe file is the correct folder. Therefore the software now is working correctly. Thanks a lot for your help. Have a nice day.
